John Bernard Suru was born March 24, 1948 in Akron, Ohio, and spent nearly all his life in Broussard, Louisiana. The physical and mental handicaps that were his from birth were less a burden than a challenge, which he met with a determination and courage that inspired all who knew him. From his earliest days, with the encouragement of his loving parents, his sister and his extended family, Johnny strove cheerfully to make the most of his life. He was educated at Northside Elementary School and the New Hope Center in Lafayette, and held various jobs in Broussard while his health allowed. From the untimely passing of his father Dennis in 1971 until the last few years when his health began to fail, he was the “man of the house" to his mother Nina Mae. To his very large extended family, and to the many citizens of Broussard who called him their friend, Johnny was a beloved figure who will be greatly missed.
John is survived by his mother, Cecile Nina Mae Bernard Suru, of Broussard LA; his sister, Nina Denise Suru Godfrey; nephews, Brian, Eliot and Paul of Laurel MD; his aunts, Aline Duhon, Agnes Girouard, Betty Girouard, and Rose Ste. Marie, all of Broussard; and his uncle John Suru, Jr. of Akron, OH
The family wishes to thank his many friends and relatives, especially George and Sybil Breaux, for the acts of kindness shown to Johnny and his family during his long difficult illness.
Pallbearers will be Mark Ste Marie, Mitchell Duhon, George Breaux, Bernard Breaux, Paul Godfrey, Brian Godfrey and Eliot Godfrey.
There will be no visitation.
