Gretchen Huckabay

Gretchen Huckabay was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on August 6, 1945 (the day America dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima), and was a long-time resident of Lafayette. She attended Lafayette High School and USL (now ULL). She worked for United Gas (later Pennzoil) in Shreveport and Lafayette. She also worked for Cotton Petroleum Corporation and for several independents in the oil industry. She later was a free-lance office assistant working for a variety of clients and worked several years for Jo Beth Taylor, Bill Guidry, and Bryan Groves, all in Lafayette. Gretchen always tried to make you laugh because she felt that if she had made you laugh, she had brightened your day. She grew up in the "House of Sarcasm" and as a result, had a mouth that wouldn't quit. You either loved her or hated her, but she could be very funny. She made small contributions to various charities and many individuals in hopes that in some small way she made the world a better place. She was known for sending funny cards that were very appropriate to the friends receiving them. It was her joy to see them astonished at how the cards fit their personalities. She is survived by her son, Bryan K. Wade and his wife, Jill Busby Wade; her granddaughter, Harper Grace Wade, former husband and father of her son, Kenneth Wade, all of Lafayette; one brother, Michael G. Huckabay of Las Vegas, Nevada, and one niece, Sandy Huckabay Neptune and her children and grandchildren, all of Las Vegas. She was preceded in death by her parents, A. E. “Huck" Huckabay and Helen Dordan Huckabay, and numerous aunts and uncles that she loved dearly and missed greatly. At her request no funeral will be held, but there will be an informal memorial gathering held at the UL Alumni House at 600 E. St Mary Blvd from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 30, 2017.
