Alfred Charles Backer

A gathering of family and friends will take place on Saturday, August 4, 2007 from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Ted Backer, 55, who found peace and crossed over to eternal life after a brief battle with cancer on Monday, July 30, 2007 surrounded by his loving family and listening to his favorite music. Ted grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and Elizabeth, New Jersey. He attended New Jersey Institute of Technology and Engineering. After receiving a Mechanical Engineering Degree he was employed as a site Engineer overlooking 40 women at the Coning Ware plant in upstate New York. While visiting a friend in South Texas, he was persuaded to become and engineer for Schlumberger Oil Service in Pleasanton, Texas where he received various awards in safety. He adapted to the hot food and weather over the next few years. By 1991, Ted was intrigued by the challenging offer from a new company Numar, Inc. to show new technology of a Magnetic Resonance tool. This opportunity afforded wonderful travel opportunities for the next 6 years. He lived in several diverse countries and cultures. Not a bad opportunity for an aging field engineer. Around 1998, Numar became part of Halliburton so Ted, Cindy and family relocated to Lafayette. As a Senior Field Engineer, father of small children and husband to a redhead, Ted lived a full life. Ted was a life long member of the organization, Redheads International of CA. (This is a support group for men who love only crazy redheads). This life long addiction has rewarded Ted many memorable stories, but mostly his 27 year relationship with wife, Cindy. Poor Ted! Ted & Cindy rode with several groups that love and respect motorcycling and helping a good cause. He was an Inaugural member of 50 groups for Iron Horse riders, member and past prez of Swamp Scooters. In addition, an active member of Cajun Harley Owners Group. His kindness and sense of humor have awarded him deep and long friendships everywhere he has been. Ted is survived by his wife, Cindy Denise Backer; two sons, Alfred Charles Backer, IV and fianc'e, Neha Patel of Lafayette and Jerek Lee Hartsell and wife, Amy Nicole Hartsell; one daughter, Shawna Linn Tucker and husband, Zachery Tucker all of Houston; three grandchildren, Tatum Nicole Hartsell, Keaton Wyatt Hartsell and Brody Lane Tucker; and one faithful companion (dog), Ruger Storm Backer.
