Betsy Hays Coreil

Graveside Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, February 24, 2023, at Lafayette Memorial Park for Betsy Dinah Hays Coreil, 85, who passed away on February 14, 2023. Fr. Steve LeBlanc will conduct the funeral services. Betsy was born in New Iberia, Louisiana to Roy and Mary Ernestine Smith Hays. She graduated from Franklin High School and earned her Bachelor of Arts from Southwestern Louisiana Institute. She was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi and served as President of Panhellenic Council her senior year. After graduation, she married Eugene “Gene” Coreil. She enjoyed living in married student housing while she pursued her teaching career and Gene finished his undergraduate degree. Betsy taught elementary education in all grade levels and physical education at Youngsville Middle School. During this time period, she and Gene were blessed with two children, Kemp and Kara. She and her family enjoyed camping and cruising with the Cruisin’ Cajuns and Texas Outlaws, fishing and going to their camp at Cypremort Point. They also made many trips around the country in motor homes as well. She retired from full time teaching and pursued substitute teaching at Comeaux High School where she also was in charge of Color Guard. She loved traveling with the Comeaux High Band during this time and participated in Ronald Reagan’s Inauguration as well as the Rose Bowl Parade. During her later years, she worked at Steve’s Gifts and Flowers. She also was a wonderful grandmother to her three grandchildren, helping with transportation to sporting events and school. Betsy will be remembered by her quick wit and no nonsense way of life. She is survived by her son, Dr. Edward Kemp Coreil and wife, Virginia, of Lafayette; daughter, Kara Mary Coreil Ward and husband, Wallace, of Newellton, LA; her grandchildren, Thomas Hays Coreil, Camille Burnside Coreil, and Catherine Virginia Coreil. She was preceded in death by her husband, M. Eugene Coreil; parents, Roy and Mary Ernestine Hays. The family would like to thank Cedar Crest Memory Care staff and NSI Hospice staff for their wonderful care. Honorary Pallbearers will be Thomas Coreil, Wallace Ward, Larry Hurst, Gordon Coreil, Charles “Chuck” Coreil, Kurt Daugereau, Ben Burnside, and David Baldridge.
