Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 19, 2006 in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Betty Jo Shewmake Hughes, 81, who died Friday, July 14, 2006 at Lafayette General Medical Center. Rev. Jan Holloway, Pastor, First United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will take place Wednesday, July 19, 2006 at Greenlawn Cemetery in Lafayette. Mrs. Hughes was born on December 6, 1924 in Maysville, Oklahoma. She attended High School in Maysville, OK, Brownfield, TX, and New Braunfeld, TX. She came to Lafayette, LA with her sister Montadell. She married Clifton Melancon from Carencro, LA. He passed away in 1958. She then married Evan Hughes in 1969. Only other living survivors include; one brother, Winford Shewmake of Brownfield, TX; nieces, Sheila Chatelain Chiasson, Jean Roller Menrick, husband Joe, Sue Shewmake Burton, husband John, Claudia Shewmake Turner, husband David; nephews, Charles Chatelain, wife Jessica, C.E. 'Cack' Roller, wife Patsy, Benny Roller; and many great and great great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, mother, Claudia Milmer Synder Shewmake, father, Richard Dee Shewmake, Sr.; sisters, Montadell 'Rouge' Shewmake Chatelain, Geeneta 'Shorty' Roller; bothers, Richard Dee 'R.D.' Shewmake, Jr., James Vernon Shewmake; niece, Bobbie Roller Williams; and nephew, Richard James 'Ritchie' Shewmake. Pallbearers will include, Charles Chatelain, Scott Chaisson, Blaine Chaisson, Gerald Meador, Robert Reed, and Allen Bonnet. Honorary pallbearers will include, Ernest Kuykendall, John Burton, Joe Menrick, C.E. Roller, Benny Roller, and Chas Miller. Thanks, with love and gratitude, to Elvie Delahoussay, LGMC Wellness Nurse, Ann Craig, LGMC Wellness; The Medical Team at LGMC, Dr. Michael Alexander, Dr. Lester Ducote, Dr. Juan Perez; Many other doctors, therapists and 7th floor staff, who all added to Betty's comfort and wellbeing; plus the 4th floor staff, many social and health care workers for her earlier hospitalization in May and June. A special thanks and prayer for the Rev. Jan Holloway, Pastor, First Methodist Church, who was with Betty and Evan until the last goodbye. May God Bless Her. Betty was an active golfer. She was a charter member of the Oakbourne Country Club. She loved sports in general and was familiar with most sports activities, teams and players. She enjoyed competition.
