Byron C. Vermillion

A celebration of a life well lived will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, December 3, 2012 in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Byron Vermillion, 87, who died on November 29, 2012 at 10:51 am at his residence. A private graveside service will be held at a later date at Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Vermillion, a resident of Lafayette, LA, was the son of the late Byron C. Vermillion, Sr. of White Hall, Illinois and the former Roxanne Neighbors of Cumberland County, Kentucky. Byron was born in Houston, Texas on December 28, 1924. He moved to Lafayette with his parents during junior high school where he met the love of his life Phoebe. They graduated from Lafayette High School together in 1942 and attended SLI (now UL Lafayette) together with their many friends until Byron was called to service during WWII. He joined the Army Air Corps (now Air Force) and as a 2nd Lieutenant he flew the P-51 Mustang, the most advanced fighter plane of the day. After his discharge he completed his education at SLI, married Phoebe, and began his long and enjoyable career at Sun Oil Company. He was a good, honest, and generous man who loved life, his family, and many friends. He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Phoebe Doucet Vermillion, of Lafayette, LA; two daughters, Missy Barry and her husband Robin of Lafayette, LA, and Carol Robbins of Lafayette, LA; two sons, Barney Vermillion and his wife Sandra of Snellville, GA, and Bill Vermillion of Lafayette, LA; eight grandchildren, Jason Baugh and his wife Jennifer, Chris Baugh and his wife Jenn, Dan Barry and his wife Erin, Rachel and Renee Barry, Savannah Robbins, Clay and Chloe Vermillion; two great grandchildren, Maxim Barry and Juniper Baugh; his sister-in-law Rosemary Singleton Logan: and special family friend, Patricia Naomi, who was like another daughter to him. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son-in-law, John Robbins, and his best friend, Ewing Latimer. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home of Lafayette on Sunday, December 2, 2012 from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm and on Monday from 9:00 am until the time of service. Pallbearers are John Singleton, Gerald Greig, Bill Kellner, Ed Landry, Craig, Clay, and Stephen Latimer, Peter Greig, and Steve Smith. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Byron and Phoebe Vermillion Endowed Scholarship Fund in Special Education at UL Lafayette, UL Lafayette Foundation, PO Box 44290, Lafayette, LA 70504.
