Carrie LaFleur Bunkley

LAFAYETTE - Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, December 22 at Delhomme Funeral Home in Lafayette for Carrie LaFleur Bunkley, 94, who died on December 14, 2022. Interment will follow in Fountain Memorial Cemetery in Lafayette. Pastor Zach Sasser, of First Presbyterian Church of Lafayette, will officiate. Carrie was born January 14, 1928, in Ville Platte, LA and was a resident of Lafayette for 66 years. She met Dan Bunkley from Stamford, TX when he was stationed at the Alexandria Army Air Base. They married in 1952, and relocated to Houston, Baton Rouge, Ville Platte and Lafayette. Dan worked in sales while Carrie worked as a bookkeeper for Sears, LSU, and Home Building and Loan (now Home Bank). Carrie gave decades of volunteer service and leadership to several ministries at Lafayette First Presbyterian Church, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, the PEO Sisterhood, and local schools. Socially, she was a vibrant member of the Blake Assisted Living community, Lafayette Greenhouse, UL Senior Programs, The 25 Club, and informal monthly groups (Bible studies, ladies’ lunch groups, French conversation groups, etc.). As a legendary friend and beauty, Carrie was uniquely present and attentive to everyone she met. She was especially gifted at sustaining long-lasting relationships with personal care and service. Comfortable with neighbors near and strangers far, she was an easy host, a welcome guest, and an adventurous traveler. Carrie is survived by her daughters, Gema Bunkley Edmiston and her husband, David of Lafayette and Rebecca Bunkley Schmeller and her husband, Rudy of Cleveland, OH; six grandchildren, Drew Edmiston, Erin Edmiston Roussel and her husband Butch; Nick, Claire, Eli and Ruth Schmeller; two great grandchildren, Mary-Frances and Juliet Roussel; sister, Sylvia Perkins. She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Dan Bunkley, her brother Warren Lafleur, her daughter Sonja Kaye Bunkley, and her parents John Rudolph and Seliman Fontenot Lafleur. The family requests that visiting hours at Delhomme Funeral Home in Lafayette be observed on Thursday, 10:00 AM until time of services. Pallbearers will be Drew Edmiston, Nick and Eli Schmeller, Steve LaFleur, John and James Perkins. In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Lafayette (fpclafayette.org) and to Hospice of Acadiana (hospiceacadiana.com).
