Charles (Charlie) Alexander Castille Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 PM on Thursday, March 13, 2025 for Charles Alexander Castille, Jr. (Charlie) at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 174 Church St., Grand Coteau, La. The burial will take place in St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery. Charlie was born on March 29, 1938, the fifth child of Charles A. and Virginia Sibille Castille in the village of Sunset, La. He attended elementary school in Grand Coteau and attended Cathedral High School, then attended LSU and the Loyola University in New Orleans, graduating in 1961 with a degree in Pharmacy. After graduation, he entered the US Army and upon discharge, he. and his co-partner Herbert Brown, founded the first discount pharmacy chain in the south, Brown’s Thrift City Pharmacy. In 1971, this 43-store chain was merged with Eckerd Drugs, now CVS Drugs. He also served on the Louisiana State Board of Pharmacy and was a member of the National Board of Pharmacy. Charlie then developed several subdivisions, shopping centers, and apartment complexes. His life-long love of horses led to the development of a breeding farm for racing quarter horses. At this time, he served on the national Racing Quarter Horse Board. In 1975, he and his brother Paul Castille, built a feed mill that pioneered a process using Louisiana products in the manufacture of pelletized feed for horses, cattle and sheep. In 1976, Charlie was elected to serve on the Louisiana State Board of Education. This board was in charge of funding and policy of elementary, secondary, and vocational technical schools of the state. In 1984, Charlie bought a psychiatric hospital called Insight in Lafayette Louisiana, doubled the number of beds, and in 1988, sold the very successful operation to PIA, a subsidiary of NME, a large hospital corporation. In 1989, he bought an oil refinery from Celeron in Mermentau, La. He refurbished the facilities, renamed it CAS Refinery, and sold it in 1991 to an east coast investor. Soon thereafter, Charlie reassumed ownership, solved some management problems, and sold it to Goldmine Refinery located in Houston Tx. During retirement, Charlie loved to read and work in his woodworking shop, and taking care of his horses. He enjoyed snow skiing, scuba diving, tennis, chess and friends of all kinds! Charlie was married to the love of his life, Susan Chandler Castille, 61 years, and they were blessed with three children: Charles (Chip) Castille, Collin R. Castille and Christy Castille Savely. He was the proud grandfather of nine grandchildren and (so far) six great grandchildren. Those who knew and loved him will greatly miss him, knowing that he was a blessing to us all! It was a life well lived and greatly blessed, and he enjoyed every minute of it!
