Charles Robert Miller

Memorial Services will be held at 12:00 noon Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church for Charles Robert Miller Jr., 88, who passed away on February 7, 2009 at Walnut Place Nursing Home in Dallas, Texas. A reception and visitation will take place Tuesday morning starting at 10:00 a.m. at St Barnabas. Reverend Morgan S. Allen, Pastor of St. Barnabas, will conduct the services. Committal will take place at Fountain Memorial Gardens Cemetery following the service. Mr. Miller was born in Priscilla, Miss. on February 7, 1921 to Dr. Charles Robert and Pearl (McQueen) Miller. He was the first child of Charles and Pearl and the first grandchild of W. Murdock and Anna Melissa McQueen. Two years later the young family moved to Texas and grandfather Mack was heart broken to have his grandson move away. Dr. Miller established a practice in Fayetteville, Texas and a baby girl, Gertrude Ann joined the family. A few years later the family moved to Leander, Texas and added Rose Marie and Douglas McQueen. Charles attended Leander schools, was a member of the Boy Scouts and the Methodist Church. He attended the University of Texas graduating in Aug of 1941, with a BS degree in Petroleum Engineering. With WWII on the horizon he joined the U.S. Navy and was sent to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland for Officers' Training. He received his commission of Ensign in May, 1942. He received more training at Penn State and was assigned to a Mine Sweeper off the coast of Virginia. In 1943 his unit was sent to the Mediterranean Sea and he took part in the invasion and liberation of Italy. Returning to the US in 1944, he was trained for the invasion of Japan. As Caption of an LSM, he was in the very large fleet assembled in the Pacific when the war ended. After the war, Mr. Miller went to work for Schlumberger. His 34-year career took him to Oklahoma, Kansas, west Texas, California, New Orleans and Lafayette. He married Winnell Aubrey on Nov. 24, 1946 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Charles and Winnell had 2 sons, Scott, born in Duncan, Okla. and Keith born in Okla. City. He retired in Lafayette and has lived there for the last 37 years. Charlie loved life - golf, travel, friends and happy hour. He had a long commitment to St. Barnabas and served in many positions at his church. He made close friends wherever life took him and maintained connection with them even when his career moved him to another city. His final home, Lafayette, was a place he thrived in and loved - he will be missed. He is survived by two sons; Scott Miller and his wife, Madeline of Baton Rouge, La., and Keith Miller and his wife Christine of Dallas, TX., two granddaughters; Melissa Miller and Jennifer Montero and her husband Sebastian Montero, two sisters Rosie Hulse and Gertrude Masters and one brother Douglas Miller. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Winnell. Pallbearers will be Scott Miller, Keith Miller and other family members and friends.
