Clarence John Smith

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, December 17, 2011 in the Delhomme Funeral Home of Broussard for Clarence John "Smitty" Smith, 86, who passed away on December 15, 2011 at 10:50 AM at Camelot of Broussard. Reverend Allen Breaux, Pastor of St. Benedict Catholic Church , will conduct the funeral services. Entombment will take place in Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery at a later date. Mr. Smith, a resident of Broussard, LA, was the son of the late Dominque Smith and the former Lawrance Roseberry both of Broussard, Louisiana. Clarence served in the U. S. Army in 1943 for 13 months until the cease fire in Pearl Harbor ended. He was Broussard's Fire Chief from 1955-1962 replacing outgoing Chief Louis Langlinais. Mr. Peter Bernard had built the fire truck that the department was using in 1934, in 1935, Clarence and Chief of Police, Gus Guilbeau, drove to Eunice and picked up a new truck from Moosa Pontiac. For 12 years he also served as an Alderman for the town until 1973. Clarence retired from Paul Fournet Air Service in 1978 as an aircraft mechanic. He was a little league coach for many years, was a member of Woodmen of the World, loved playing bingo and visiting friends at LaBelle Maison and watching football with his family. "Paw" will be missed very much by all of his family. He is survived by two sons, John "Butch" Smith and Robert James Smith and wife Joan; one daughter, Winnie Smith and spouse Jessie Blanchard; four grandchildren, Jason Paul Smith, Dwayne Michael Smith, Chantel Girouard and Tyler Smith; two great grandchildren, Keegan Smith and Kamryn Smith and brother-in-law, Bill Morvant and wife Pat all of Broussard, LA. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Louisa "LuLu" Smith; one son, Nick Smith and one brother, Robert Smith. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home of Broussard on Friday, December 16, 2011 from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM Friday Evening.
