Dr. Daniel Curtis Dunlap, MD

Dr. Daniel Curtis Dunlap, a long-time resident and physician in Lafayette, LA passed away peacefully at age 84 on March 16, 2023. Dan was born on July 9, 1938, in Oil City Pennsylvania to the late Evelyn Caroline Haun and the late Vernon Emory Dunlap of Youngstown Ohio. Dan graduated from Ohio University in 1960 and The Ohio State University College of Medicine graduate school in 1964. Dan served in the Navy from 1969 to 1973 as a physician at Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan. He and his wife Cynthia Ann Stewart Dunlap moved to Lafayette after his naval service where he dedicated his career to Neurology, serving the greater Lafayette area until he retired in 2014. Dan was a faithful member of the Episcopal Church of The Ascension for 48 years. He was a member of the Southern Clinical Neurology Society for 22 years, having served as its President from 2002-2004, and he was also a member of the Southwest Louisiana Education & Referral Center for 14 years. Dan was a lifelong member of Phi Chi medical fraternity and enjoyed 44 years of membership in the Krewe of Gabriel. Dan enjoyed handball at Red Lerilles, scuba diving, underwater photography, snow skiing and travel. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, intelligence, generosity, kindness, wit, loyalty, and life of service to his community. His family was the joy of his life, and a close second was his allegiance to The Ohio State University and its fight song, which he played at every opportunity, to the begrudging laughter of friends and family. Dan was preceded in death by his beloved wife Cindy and his sisters, Linda Rae Rambo and Deborah Sue Haun. Dan is survived by his son, Jeff Daniel Dunlap; daughter, Jennifer Dunlap (Josh) Gustafson; brother, Gary Allen Dunlap; sisters, Beverly Jean Gibson, Cynthia (Robert) Needham; and grandchildren, Lexi Ann Dunlap, Charis Ann Dunlap, Erik Reid Gustafson, Grant Daniel Gustafson, and Karina Ann Gustafson. He also leaves behind his adored canine companion, Miley. Funeral services will be held June 16, 2023 at 11:00 am at the Episcopal Church of The Ascension, 1030 Johnston St., Lafayette, LA, 70501, followed by a reception in Coughlin Hall. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 am also in Coughlin Hall. There will be a private burial. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Episcopal Church of The Ascension are welcomed and appreciated.
