Daniel Carl Handschin

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 16, 2024 in First United Methodist Church for Daniel Carl Handschin. Reverend’s Jessica Lowe and Fred Fraser will conduct the funeral service. Burial will take place at 1:30 PM following the service at Southwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Jennings. Daniel Carl Handschin was born on February 9, 1941 in Sellersville, Pennsylvania to Daniel and Augusta Greulich Handschin. He passed away on May 11, 2024 at Calcutta House with Hospice in Lafayette, Louisiana. Danny grew up in Souderton, Pennsylvania. He attended schools in the area and graduated from Souderton Area Joint Junior-Senior High School. In 1961, Dan joined the United States Air Force. During his time in the service, he was stationed in Illinois, Texas, Oklahoma, the Philippines, Vietnam and Tennessee. After separation from the service, he attended Spartan’s School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He received his license as an airplane power plant mechanic and radio operator. After graduation, he taught at the school for one year as a hand tool instructor. In 1972, he began working as a helicopter mechanic for Petroleum Helicopters in Lafayette, Louisiana. His next job change was as an offshore electrician with Tenneco, Chevron, Devin and a number of different oil companies. He attended Tulsa Junior College, the University of Southwestern Louisiana and in his 80’s attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with the Veteran’s Upward Bound Program. During his time offshore, he continued his service to his country in the Army Reserves. He retired after 24 years of service as a Chief Warrant Officer II. On October 4, 1963, Danny married La Juana Sue Hill at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. They were the parents of three children: Daniel James, Gina Roseann and Jason Paul. On October 4, 2023, they celebrated 60 years of marriage. After his retirement, Danny and La Juana traveled throughout the South as NOMADS with the Methodist Church rebuilding and repairing homes and businesses after natural disasters. Dan was a handyman and could fix almost anything. He was especially helpful to the widowed ladies at First United Methodist Church. He loved playing golf, watching his grandchildren play in their sports, Pepsi, strawberry ice cream and “horsey bite the apple.” He was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, James and Jay Hill, and grandson, Barret James Davidson. He is survived by his wife, La Juana Handschin of the home, son, Daniel and wife, Sandra Handschin of Brunswick, Georgia; daughter, Gina Davidson and husband, John of Lafayette; son, Jason Handschin and wife, Jennifer, of Broussard. Grandchildren: Troy Efthemes, Georgetown, Kentucky; Zack Efthemes, Brunswick, Georgia, Gregory Bouchereau, Longview, Texas; Katlyn Meadows and husband, Wesley of Sterling, Kansas; Keegan and Konner Handschin of Broussard, Louisiana, special family of Pixan and Mike Bouchereau, Longview, Texas. His sister, Shelia Hafler, Perkasie, Pennsylvania. Godson, Brent McGarr, Nashville, Tennessee and numerous nieces and nephews. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at the First United Medthodist Church on Thursday, May 16, 2024 from 9:00 AM until the time of service. Pallbearers are: Al Ashley, Bob Ward, Roger Cook, Tom Farmer, sons, Daniel and Jason Handschin and grandsons, Konner and Keegan Handschin. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Contemporary Christians Sunday School Class.
