Doris Comeaux Broussard

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated for Doris Broussard, age 95, on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at 11 am by the Reverend Paul Bienvenu, concelebrant Reverend Michael J. Russo and Deacon Tim Maragos at Saint Alphonsus Catholic Church in Maurice, Louisiana. Doris died peacefully at her house on Saturday, December 23rd. She will be interred with her husband Wallace in the mausoleum at Saint Alphonsus cemetery. A lifetime resident of Maurice, Doris is survived by brother George Comeaux and wife Janelle and sisters-in-law Alice Schroeder and Faye Prejean; children Debra Ann (Paul Choate), Kim Paul (Cheryl Thibodeaux), Cheryl Marie (Louis Perret), Michael Todd (Donna Lally); grandchildren Faith Choate (Bryan Roy), Tyler Choate, Tristen Broussard (Landon Fitzgerald), Brody Broussard, Jency Broussard, Annie Perret, Max Perret, twins Jenna and Ethan Broussard, Ryan and Jason Lally; great-grandchildren Ella and Amalie Roy, Asher, Briggs and Crew Fitzgerald and Brynlee Fitzgerald. Doris is preceded in death by husband Wallace Paul Broussard, parents Lannes and Ena Broussard Comeaux, brother Curlis Comeaux and grandchild Ainsley Broussard. Doris was a lifetime member of Saint Alphonsus where she received her holy sacraments. She was dedicated to God as a daily communicant, a volunteer in the church office and church choir, a member of the Altar Society, a Minister of the Eucharist for the homebound and a volunteer Catechism teacher for 40 years for which she received the Bishops Award for Outstanding Service to the Diocese of Lafayette. Doris graduated from Maurice High as salutatorian and received her Bachelor of Arts in Education degree at Southwestern Louisiana Institute. She was a beloved elementary and junior high English teacher at Maurice High School for 26 years. She was a lifetime member of the Vermilion Parish Teachers Association. Her first language was Acadian French and she was part of the generation punished for speaking French in school. She was nicknamed Loon as a child and was affectionately called Aunt Loon by her Broussard family in-laws, nieces, and nephews. She enjoyed singing at Broussard family gatherings and had the most fun with the game of bourrée which she played weekly from childhood until age 92. She was highly regarded for her delicious, savory Cajun cooking and cold sweet tea. Visiting hours will be observed at the Maurice location of Delhomme Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 26th from 4-8 pm and on Wednesday, December 27th (her wedding anniversary) from 8 am until the time of service. A rosary will be led by Deacon Tim Maragos, Madelyn Maragos and Deacon Keith Duhon at 6 pm on Tuesday evening. Mass pallbearers are her sons, son- in- law, grandsons and godchild Tab Comeaux; Ministers of the Word are Tristen Fitzgerald and Annie Perret; Altar Server is Max Perret; Presenter of Gifts are Jency Broussard and cousin Daniel Vincent.
