Eleanor Straub

Eleanor Francisco Straub passed away peacefully at her home on May 6, 2015. Born on August 22, 1931 in Beaumont, TX, Eleanor was the daughter of the late Alice Louise Woodhead and John Whitley Francisco. She moved to Lafayette at the age of three where she spent her childhood before attending Louise S. McGehee in New Orleans, going on to earn a degree in Art History from Newcomb College of Tulane University. In 1952, she married the late John Nicholas Straub, M.D. After briefly living in Big Spring, TX, Neosho, MO and Carmel, CA, in 1955 they settled in Lafayette. Their first child was born four years later, and their ninth, fourteen years after that. Affectionately known as Ellie or Elle, she had an endearing personality, tremendous wit and ever-flowing grace. She was also a devoted and loving wife and mother. Her children and grandchildren benefited immensely from her patience, sense of humor, and ice cream pies. Eleanor contributed her time and brilliant writing talents to various community organizations including “Les Vingt Quatre ” (The Lafayette Museum Association), the Lafayette Public Library, the Library Association, The Episcopal Church of the Ascension, and the Greater Lafayette Mardi Gras Association. In the mid 80’s Ellie authored a weekly column titled “En Fin” published in The Daily Advertiser memorializing people of Acadiana, its history and Ellie’s perspective on life and family. Ellie found joy in the simple pleasures of life - working crossword puzzles, taking walks in Girard Park and traveling to visit family and friends. With that gift of perspective, she always felt extremely blessed. Eleanor is survived by her children: Vincent Straub and wife Janice, David Straub and wife Jing, Alicia Kreamer and husband Tommy, Leigh Hull and husband Mike, Jeffrey Straub, Jeanne Vizzi and husband Peter, Karen Conte and husband Kevin, Drue Quire and husband Jeff and Carole Netter and husband Dann, and by eleven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. The family would like to thank her devoted and loving caregivers Catherine Harris, Lucretia Richard and more recently Elaine Venable for their service and care. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Friday, May 8, 2015 at Delhomme Funeral Home on Bertrand. The family welcomes all to share reflections and memories of Ellie's life on Friday evening at 6:00 pm. A memorial service will be held at The Episcopal Church of the Ascension on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 11:00 am.
