Freddie Koury

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 in Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Freddie Koury, 75, who passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2015 at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center. On Sunday, June 28, 2015, Fred "Freddie" Koury quietly left his earthly family to join his heavenly family. He was a kind, gentle, and shy man who impacted the lives of all who knew him. Fred grew up in Lafayette and was greatly influenced by his father, Jacob, who immigrated to the United States from Syria and his mother Victoria, who was born in New Iberia and also of Syrian descent. He loved and respected his parents and was intensely proud of his heritage. Since he was the youngest child of the family, his four brothers, Leon, Joseph, Jake and Johnny and his sister Elaine were always very protective of their younger brother. Fred returned their nurturing with love and devotion. There was a tremendous bond between Fred and those who loved him. Fred attended Lafayette High School and upon graduation he started his career with the Louisiana Department of Labor. He was steadfast in his work ethic. Like his brother, Jake, Fred enjoyed helping others find work and careers and did so for 27 years until his retirement. Fred always spoke kindly of those he helped and found public service gratifying. So, it was natural for him to continue to serve even when it was no longer his job. His family, especially nieces and nephews, will tell you that any time they needed anything, Uncle Freddie was the first to volunteer to assist them. Although he was heartbroken, he made sure he was there for each of his siblings as they endured illness. Fred survived all of his brothers and sister but each loss took its toll on him. Even during his later life, when he was enduring his own physical problems, he was taking his nephew to doctor's appointments, driving the Sisters of the Missionaries of Charity to home visits and assisting them in ways he never really talked about. He also greatly enjoyed his time assisting the Lafayette Council on Aging. He was always the first to help and the very last to talk about all that he did. To many Fred seemed shy and serious. However, Fred Koury had a tremendous sense of humor and laughed easily and often. While his laugh was not boisterous, it was hardy, sincere and distinct. What began with a giggle, always ended with his whole face being part of the laugh out loud moment. He found his brothers and cousins especially funny and would "get tickled" as he would try to tell others what one of them had done. He loved going to the casino more for the joy of the outing than the gambling. This provided his brothers and cousins with fertile ground for the teasing they heaped upon Fred. He loved those exchanges and could give as good as he got. Fred Koury had a distinct swagger when he walked and was the sibling most like his mother. She earned the nickname "Still Water" and he continued her tradition of not speaking often but saying a lot when he did speak. He certainly enjoyed life but riches and possessions were not what made him happy. Knowing that his family was doing well and being of service to them made him happiest. Fred will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him. Reverend Daniel Edwards, Pastor of St. Jules Catholic Church, will be Celebrant of the Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery. He is survived by many loving relatives, as well as many close friends, all of which he considered family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob Koury and Victoria Koury; sister, Elaine Koury Dominique; brothers, Leon Koury, Jacob Koury, Jr., Joseph Koury and John Koury. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home on Bertrand Drive on Monday, June 29, 2015 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. A Rosary will be recited at 6:30 pm on Monday evening in the funeral home. Visiting hours will continue on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 from 8:00 am until the time of service. Pallbearers will be John Koury, Jr., Jason Habbit, Ferris Habbit, Johnny Abdella, Carrol Castille and Philip Norse. Honorary Pallbearers will be David Koury, Jerry Habbit and Donald Guilbeau.
