George Norris Hebert

Funeral Services will be held at a 10:00 am Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at St. Basil Church for George Norris Hebert, 80, who passed away on May 6, 2012 at 12:40 pm at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center. Reverend A. Rex Broussard, Jr., Pastor of St. Basil Church, will be Celebrant of the Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Lectors will be Patty Credeur and Barbara Dauterive. Gift bearers will be softball players that he has coached in the past. Entombment will take place in St. Basil Catholic Cemetery. Mr. Hebert, a resident of Lafayette, LA, was the son of the late Isidore Hebert of Lafayette Parish, Louisiana and the former Olita Trahan of Lafayette Parish, Louisiana. He was a member of St. Basil Church. George Norris grew up in Lafayette and Vermilion parishes. As both of his parents were deceased when he was a young boy, he was reared by his brother, Alfred and wife, Maisie. A graduate of Maurice High School in 1950, he enlisted in the US Air Force and was stationed in the U. S. and England. Upon discharge in 1954 he enrolled in SLI, now ULL, and married Thelma Vincent of Maurice, LA. Upon his graduation with a Bachelor's Degree in Education, he began his career in teaching at Lafayette Elementary. He then enrolled at LSU to pursue a Master's Degree in Education. At this time, he, Thelma and their 3 young children moved to Lafayette. He then continued his education achieving his Plus 30 Specialization and shortly thereafter became Guidance Counselor at Lafayette High School. With the opening of the new Woodvale Primary School in Lafayette, George was fortunate enough to be selected as its' first principal. He thoroughly loved this job, the children, their families, the teachers and staff of this wonderful school. He continued as principal of Woodvale until assuming the principal position at L.J. Alleman Elementary School. George remained there until transferring to a supervisor position at the school board office where he remained until his retirement in 1982. While George Norris placed great value on education, he also recognized the importance of having fun and enjoying friends. He loved almost all sports and played, coached, and refereed high school basketball in his younger years. He also loved coaching his daughters' softball teams for many years, gaining many more 'daughters' and friends. He and Thelma then became RV'ers and were members of the Cruisin' Cajuns, Les Amis, Texas Outlaws, and 'The Friends' RV clubs for over 20 years. He was also asked to serve on several committees with the national Family Motor Coach Association. Through their travels and RV clubs, they had wonderful times and made even greater friendships with so many special people. Undoubtedly, his greatest enjoyment was his love of gardening. From his large day lily garden when they resided in Judice, to his smaller flower beds and garden when they moved back into Lafayette, he just loved working in his yard and sharing his plants with many friends, neighbors and family. He is survived by his wife Thelma Vincent Hebert of Lafayette, LA; two daughters, Kaaren Hebert of Lafayette, LA and Sonya Hebert and her husband John of Lafayette, LA; one son, Kevin Hebert of Baltimore, MD; two grandchildren, Justin and Scott Hebert of Lafayette, LA; one sister, Wilda Hebert of Carencro, LA; and one brother, J.C. Hebert and his wife Mary of Lake Charles, LA. He was preceded in death by his parents. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home of Lafayette on Tuesday from 3:00 pm until 9:00 pm and on Wednesday from 8:00 am until the time of service. A rosary will be recited by Mary Menard, his niece, on Tuesday evening at 6:00 pm in the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Justin Hebert, Scott Hebert, Glenn Hebert, Earl Hebert, Chris Lachaussee, and Whitney Ambrose. Honorary pallbearers will be John Hebert, Earl Leblanc, Dudley Earl Duhon, Bert Guerin, Horace Trahan, Danny Credeur, and Kevin Lohr. His family would like to thank all of his friends and especially his neighbors with whom he had developed special relationships and fondness and who were all so helpful and supportive, especially over the past several months. Special thanks also to the staff of Our Lady of Lourdes, 3rd floor PCU and 5th floor Oncology; the staff at M.D. Anderson Research Center Hospital, Dr. Eugene Brierre and Louisiana Oncology Associates, Dr. Michael Alexander, and the staff of Hospice of Acadiana.
