Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 9, 2024 in Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for George Winston Stokes Sr., 83, who passed away on March 6, 2024. Fr. Steve Leblanc will conduct the funeral services. The burial will take place in Lafayette Memorial Park. George Winston Stokes Sr., a longtime resident of Lafayette, was the son of the late Winston Ledoux Stokes and the former Lydia Inez Reiszner. He was born May 27, 1940 in Bunkie, LA and baptized at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. He attended Bunkie Elementary School and then graduated from Lafayette High in 1958. George earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Petroleum Engineering in 1963 at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette. While at USL, he was a member of Tau Beta Pi Engineering Fraternity. After graduating, he went to work for The California Company, which later became Chevron. George was employed briefly by A.J. Pantelea & Assoc. before establishing George W. Stokes, Inc. In 1973, Stokes and Spiehler, Inc. was formed and continues to this day. George loved the outdoors, especially hunting elk. He was also a lifetime member and supporter of Ducks Unlimited and The Patriots Circle of The National WWII Museum in New Orleans, LA. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Edith Carolyn Driskell Stokes; sons, Brent Stokes and wife, Laura, Brett Stokes and wife, Joan, Winston Stokes and wife, Brandi, and Keith Stokes, all of Lafayette; grandchildren, Drew Stokes (Alison), Meredith Stokes Breaux (Stephen), Brent Stokes Jr (Melissa), Caroline Stokes, Aimee Stokes, G.W. Stokes III, Taylor Savant, and Angelle Stokes; great-grandchildren, Natalee, Grace, and Brees; sister, Lynette Stokes Clarke (John); and canine companion, "Karma". He was preceded in death by his parents, Winston and Lydia Stokes; and brother, Winston L. "Skip" Stokes (Kathryn). The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home - Bertrand on Saturday, March 9, 2024 beginning at 10:00 AM. A Rosary will be prayed at 1:00 PM on Saturday afternoon in the funeral home. Visitation will continue, following the Rosary, until the time of service. The pallbearers will be Drew Stokes, Brent Stokes Jr., G.W. Stokes, Chuck Roth, Brent Stokes Sr., Brett Stokes Sr., Winston Stokes, and Keith Stokes.
