Gertrude Marie Stromer

Funeral services will be held at a 3:00 pm Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Broussard for Gertrude Marie Stromer, 89, who passed away on Saturday, June 14, 2008. Father Keith Landry, Associate Pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, will be Celebrant of the Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Interment will take place in Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery. Gertrude Stromer was the daughter of Dr. George P. Stromer, a medical doctor who served the community of Broussard for over 40 years during the 1900's. Her mother was Caroline Duchamp de Chastaigne of St. Martinville. Gertrude, better known as Gert to family and friends, was an educator and athlete. She attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (then named SLI) to receive her BA Degree in Education. While attending the University she won many tournaments and a state championship representing the college in the sport of tennis. She received her Masters Degree in Education at Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio, Texas. Gert taught at St. Genevieve for many years before accepting a teaching and coaching position in Mier. She retired from the Acadia Parish School System. Gert was a positive influence to many young lives in her years of serving the communities as a teacher. She is survived by one sibling, Sister Ann Caroline, a former educator for many years at St. Genevieve and Father Teurlings High. Gert is also survived by many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. She was a friend to them all. Gert was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Fritz, Harold, Henry, George, and Conrad Stromer; and four sisters, Flora Livergood, Rosemary St. Julien, Bernice Rasmissen, and Georgette Stromer. The family requests that visiting hours be observed on Monday from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm and continue Tuesday from 12:00 pm until time of service. A rosary will be recited at 6:00 pm on Monday in the funeral home. The family wishes to give special thanks to Vermilion Health Care in Nunez and to all the staff members that gave Gert many years of love and generous care. She found peace and contentment at their facility because of the wonderful environment they create for all their residents. The entire staff opened their hearts to her and became part of her family. We thank them for touching her life in a manner so important to her. Mrs. Doris Rubin was also a good and faithful friend who was always available to Gert. The family is grateful for her contributions. Southern Care Hospice was valuable in giving support and comfort during the last part of her journey.
