Harvey G. Guthrey

Harvey Glen Guthrey, departed this life surrounded by friends and family, on March 1, 2010, at his home in Lafayette, Louisiana. Mr. Guthrey was born of the marriage of Clarence Ward Guthrey and Josephine Sutton Guthrey, on March 30, 1918, near the Town of Vinton, Louisiana, and it was in that same vicinity that he spent the younger years of his life. He attended High School in Vinton, LA, and was a member of both the 1935 and the 1936 Vinton High School Football Teams, which not only won the State Class B Football Championships both years, but which were amongst only a very few such Louisiana football teams to have ever enjoyed consecutive undefeated seasons. Mr. Guthrey is believed to have begun his professional career in September, 1938, working at the Oil Camp known as the Sulphur Mines, at Calcasieu Parish. Once employed by the Union Sulphur and Oil Company, later known as Union Texas Petroleum Corporation, he remained its employee until he retired from his position as a Superintendent of Production, in 1983. Mr. Guthrey married his beloved wife Bernice Elois Pierson, from Kinder, Louisiana, in 1940, and remained married to her until her death on January 6, 1999. Mr. and Mrs. Guthrey made their first home at the Sulphur Mines Oil Camp, and there began raising their three children. In or about 1958, upon the winding down of the Oil Camp, he and his family moved, establishing residency in the Town of Sulphur, In 1967, they moved to the City of Lafayette. Mr. Guthrey was a Thirty Second Degree Mason, and, while a resident of the Town of Sulphur, a member of Henning Memorial Methodist Church. Upon arriving in Lafayette, he and his family attended Asbury Methodist Church, where he and his wife faithfully served in various capacities, including President of his "Challengers" Sunday School Class and as an Usher at Sunday Services. He was an important contributor in the construction of the Camp Fire Girls' Camp, Wi Ta Winton in Calcasieu Parish and instrumental in helping his Grandson Andy Boagni become an Eagle Scout. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, and gardening. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, and his brother William (Bill) Guthrey, of Woodlawn, La.. Mr. Guthrey is survived by his sister, Margaret Guthrey McBride of Houston TX; his children, Glynda, (Mrs. Quincy Thomas Hinton Jr.) of Kingwood, TX, Judith Guthrey Boagni, and Harvey Ray Guthrey, husband of Constance B. Guthrey, of Lafayette; 8 Grandchildren: Christopher Hinton, husband of Tina Hinton; Benjamin Hinton; and Catherine Hinton Giffhorn, wife of Andy Giffhorn all of Houston, and Natalie Rae Guthrey, of Charlotte, NC, Pierson Tyler Guthrey a student at Tulane University, New Orleans, of S. Carolina and New Orleans; Andy and Henry (Hank) Boagni Jr. of Lafayette, and Michael Anthony (Tony) Boagni, husband of Victoria Guarisco of Baton Rouge, La.; 9 Great Grandchildren: Hope and Hardt Hinton of the Woodlands, TX, Austin and Braeden Giffhorn of Houston, TX, Michael Anthony (Bo) Boagni Jr. of Shreveport, La, Jessica Page (Jesse) Boagni of Lafayette, La, John Luke Guarisco Boagni and Matthew Michael Guarisco Boagni, Austin Luke Guarisco, all of Baton Rouge, La. Mr. Guthrey's life was based on the simple premise of hard work. He had a wonderful smile, a contagious sense of humor and a loving tender heart. He could be trusted and trusted nearly everyone (sometimes to a fault). He believed that a mans word and a hand shake were the strongest and most binding of all contracts. He helped everyone that he could, and would at any time deviate from the path he was on to lend a helping hand to someone in need. He was a very kind, loving, thoughtful and Godly man. He will be missed, but his presence in this world left it a better place. We love you 'Poppy'. A Memorial Service honoring his life will be held Saturday, March 7, 2010, at Asbury United Methodist Church, at 1:00 PM, with a reception in the Fellowship Hall to follow.
