Funeral Services will be held at a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am on Monday, May 9, 2011 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church for Irene Melancon, 90, who passed away peacefully on May 5, 2011 at 4:00PM at her residence. Reverend O. Joseph Breaux, Pastor of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, will be Celebrant of the Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Entombment will take place in St. Alphonsus Mausoleum. Mrs. Melancon, a resident of Maurice, LA, was the daughter of the late Arthur Mathis Broussard of Maurice, Louisiana and the former Effie Comeaux of Leroy, Louisiana. She was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. She had been a school teacher for 38 years. She enjoyed painting, working in her flower beds, taking many trips, and spending time on her deck. She was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by one daughter, Joan Weeks and husband, Richard of El Paso, Tx; two sons, Byron Joseph Cooper of Maurice, La and Arthur Mark Cooper and wife Julie of Lafayette, La; one brother, Claude J. Broussard of Maurice, La; five grandchildren, Rich Weeks, Heather Zehnder, Courtney Weeks, Carrie Cooper and Lauren Cooper; three great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Paul J. Melancon and two brothers, Harris and Ray Broussard. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home of Maurice Sunday, May 8, 2011 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Sunday. A rosary will be recited at 6:15 PM in the funeral home. Visitation will continue on Monday from 8:00 AM until the time of services. Pallbearers will be Byron Cooper, Mark Cooper, Richard Broussard, Lynn Broussard, Richard Weeks and Mark Fontenot. Memorial contributions can be made in her name to Hospice of Acadiana, 2600 Johnston Street, Ste. 200, Lafayette, LA 70503. The family would like to extend special thanks to Hospice of Acadiana and her caregivers, Janet, Jocelyn Faye, Lydia, Pat with Louise sitting service for their compassionate care and attention given to her during her time of need.
