James Watson Lindsey

James Watson Lindsey, 84, died Friday, January 9, 2015 at Cornerstone Village South in Lafayette, LA. He leaves his wife of 60 years, Frances Elliott Lindsey of Lafayette; sister, Carriece Lindsey Duke and her husband Ray of Olla; two sons, Gregg Lindsey and his wife Karen of Corpus Christi, TX, and Lt Col (Retired) Kirby Lindsey and his wife Joan of Niceville, FL; daughter-in-law Connie Lindsey of Rosefield; six grandsons, Joshua Lindsey and his wife Rae of Olla, Seth Lindsey of Rosefield, Jackson Lindsey and his wife Claire of Corpus Christi, TX, Grant Lindsey and his wife Kimberly of Boerne, TX, Kellen Lindsey of Jacksonville, FL, and Ian Lindsey of Niceville, FL; two great granddaughters, Presley Kate Lindsey of Olla and Chloe Marie Lindsey of Corpus Christi, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Albert Lindsey and Mirva Watson Lindsey; brother, Myron Lindsey; and son, Mark Lindsey. Born in Shongaloo, LA, in 1930 his family moved to Olla, LA, in 1940 where he would meet and eventually marry the love of his life, Frances Elliott. In his early years, he helped out in his dad’s barber shop shining shoes. After graduating from Urania High School in 1947, he attended LSU on a baseball and basketball scholarship where he lettered in both sports for three years and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. He joined the Air Force during the Korean War, married Frances and moved to Ent Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, CO, where he served as an Intelligence Officer. After separating from the Air Force as a First Lieutenant, he returned to Baton Rouge where he taught and coached at Woodlawn High School and earned a master’s degree in Education from LSU. A successful insurance career followed that led to a number of moves as he was promoted. The last insurance company he worked for encouraged him to pursue the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) license in order to service tractor dealers and their children who usually inherited the business. As a CFP he formed a sole proprietorship that allowed him to expand his practice. Being able to fully serve his clients in the financial arena was very satisfying and he built lifelong relationships. He reluctantly retired in June 2012. He had a passion for sports, particularly LSU, and was a talented tennis player. He loved the Lord and was an excellent Bible teacher and taught many different Sunday School classes at First Baptist Church Lafayette where he also served as a deacon and on various financial and building construction committees. He served as a Gideon for many years speaking at churches, raising funds and distributing Bibles. He was a consummate encourager and always brought out the best in everyone. Services will be held at First Baptist Church Lafayette on Saturday, January 17, 2015. Visitation is from 10:00AM to 11:00AM followed by a Memorial Service from 11:00AM to 12:00Noon.
