John W. Grant

Funeral services will be held at a 2:00 pm Mass of Christian Burial Saturday, April 26, 2008 at Holy Cross Catholic Church for John W. Grant, a prominent Lafayette attorney, who passed away unexpectedly at his residence on Wednesday, April 23, 2008. Interment will take place at Fountain Memorial Gardens. Reverend Timothy Richard, Pastor of St. Edmond's Catholic Church, will be Celebrant of the Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Con-Celebrant will be Reverend Howard Blessing, Pastor of Holy Cross Catholic Church John was born in Shreveport, LA to Ruth Tilly Grant and Francis Weir Grant. He graduated from Mandeville High School and the University of Southwestern Louisiana. He earned a full scholarship to Tulane University Law School and graduated in 1976. After several years in West Monroe, he returned to private practice in Lafayette, primarily in the oil and gas industry. John was a member of the bar for as long as accurate records have been kept. He was a distinguished member of the Association's Board of Directors since 2003. He was editor of The Promulgator, the association's newsletter for three years. He also served on several committees as assigned by the President of the organization. He was a dedicated member of the Lafayette Parish Bar Association who was always willing to step forward to make a difference in his profession. John was also very active in Lafayette Volunteer Lawyers where he assisted numerous low income, needy clients in obtaining access to the justice system. As a result of John's volunteerism with Lafayette Volunteer Lawyers, mothers were able to receive much needed child support, obtain a divorce and take the next step in their life in being self sufficient. He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman, and previously managed the Florence Club. He could be frequently seen throwing a cast net on the bay at sunrise. John was also an Eagle Scout. John was a loving husband, devoted father and fun loving 'Pa'. His endless sense of humor and booming laugh will be greatly missed. He kept an open door for his friends and colleagues, and always made time to listen and help those in need. Survivors include his loving wife, Barbara Grant; son, Dr. Matthew Grant and wife, Dr. Reyna Grant of Birmingham, AL; daughters, Sara Grant Broussard and husband, Donovan Broussard of Lafayette, and Catherine Grant of Lafayette; grandkids, Emilie Marie Broussard, Audrey Marie Broussard, Ava Grace Broussard and Elise Claire Broussard; sister, Sharon Wildwind and husband, Ken Wildwind of Calgary, Canada; brother, Ward Grant of Dallas, TX; and as well as legions of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. The family wishes to thank his loyal office staff, Nadine Hardy, Lanie Border and Jade Richard for their years of service and friendship. The family requests visiting hours be observed on Friday from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm and continue on Saturday from 11:00 am until the time of service. A rosary will be recited by Deacon Mike Clark Friday evening at 6:30 pm in the Delhomme Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Andre Doguet, Mike Benoit, Mike Guidry, Randy Myers, Bob Cole, Bill Clay, George Forest, and John Miller. Honorary pallbearers will be Dan Hughes and Thomas Gray.
