Josefa "Georgina" Sabillón

Josefa “Georgina” Sabillón was born in Honduras ninety-four years ago. A dedicated and intelligent woman, she worked for twenty-one years as a legal secretary in San Pedro Sula. In the early 1980s, she made the courageous decision to immigrate to the United States (under the auspices of her brother-in-law, Silano Orellano, a U.S. Navy, WW2 veteran), in search of better opportunities for her family. She deeply loved her adopted country and proudly became a U.S. citizen a few years later. Though her limited English made it difficult to find work in her profession, Georgina never let obstacles deter her. She took on humble, physically demanding jobs at minimum wage in order to support her children. She never complained—she simply did what needed to be done. Her resilience and quiet strength left a lasting impact on all who knew her. Her greatest pride was always her children, whom she loved fiercely and unconditionally. Georgina also loved the Lord with all her heart. She served faithfully in her church community for many years, caring for infants in the nursery and assisting with Vacation Bible School—handing out snacks, offering warm smiles, and blessing others with her gentle spirit. She continued to serve others joyfully until her health no longer allowed her to do so. She is survived by her daughters: Miriam Calante and her husband, Isidro, of Gretna; and Jeaneth Riley and her husband, Pres, of Lafayette. She also leaves behind six grandchildren: Roger Fajardo and his wife, Nicole; Anna Lizardo and her husband, Enrique; Cindy Deras; Jimmy Deras and his wife, Tracy; Johnny Riley; and Amy Long and her husband, Joshua. She was blessed with ten great-grandchildren, and survived by two sisters, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Georgina was preceded in death by her husband, Juan P. Deras; her son, Juan A. Deras; her parents - Professor Donaldo Sabillón and Senovia; two sisters, Romelia Sabillón and Aminta Altamirano and her husband, Armando; and her brother, Maximo “Mancho” Sabillón. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Nursing Specialties Hospice for their professional, compassionate care, and to Ageless Health Care for providing sitter services. Funeral arrangements are being coordinated by Delhomme Funeral Home in Lafayette and Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home in New Orleans. Visitation will begin Wednesday, May 14, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Delhomme Funeral Home – Lafayette, Louisiana on the day of the service, followed by a funeral ceremony at 11:00 AM. Afterward, Georgina will be transported to Lake Lawn Park Cemetery in New Orleans, Louisiana for interment at 3:00 PM. A brief graveside service will be held, where family and friends will gather to honor her life and lay her to rest beside her beloved son, Juan, in accordance with her wishes. “Well done, good and faithful servant ....
