Lauris Bernard Gallet

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, April 27, 2007 at First Baptist Church of Milton for Lauris 'T-Pop' Bernard Gallet, 81, who passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2007 at Meadowbrook Specialty Hospital. Reverend Tom Lambert, Pastor of First Baptist Church of Milton, will conduct the funeral services. Interment will take place in St. Joseph Cemetery in Milton. Mr. Gallet, a native and resident of Maurice, was the son of the late Albert Gallet of Maurice and the former Helen Simon of Lafayette Parish. Lauris had a long history of military service and was a soldier during the Korean Conflict and World War II. He joined the Navy in 1943 and was stationed in the South Pacific in 1944 in a hospital ship, the USS Samaritan. He was a part of the Saipan and Titan Invasions and was involved in the care of wounded Marines. He came back to the states in 1945 and was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia participating in destroyer training. He subsequently went to Boston, Massachusetts and was stationed on the USS Small, a destroyer ship, to perform test runs to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He served in that capacity until the end of World War II. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in January of 1946. Mr. Gallet remained a civilian until April of 1947 when he joined the United States Army. With this branch of the military, he was stationed in the Virgin Island of St. Thomas testing gas masks. In 1949, he came back to the states and was stationed in Pine Bluff, Arkansas with Chemical Warfare. In 1950, he volunteered for Korea from 1950 until 1952 operating a landing craft transferring supplies and troops to Inchone, Korea. He returned to the states in 1952 and was stationed in Fort Lawton, Washington. There he worked resupplying Air Force base personnel and supplies in Alaska. He did this until 1954. He then went to Okinawa, Japan again operating a landing craft supplying military personnel and supplies. He returned to the United States in 1954 to Fort Eustis, Virginia and was involved with Research and Development, testing helicopters and small landing crafts. He remained there until his retirement from military service in 1965. Mr. Gallet gave 20 years of his life as a SFC to protect and serve his country. He did this proudly. Survivors include his daughter, Ellen Maitland of Oregon; granddaughter, Kristy Moore; great grandson, Wyatt Moore; stepdaughters, Cynthia Picard and Betty Langford; stepson, Paul M. Baudoin. He is also survived by step grandchildren, Clint Picard whom he cherished dearly and gave himself unconditionally, Ricky Thibodeaux, Greg Thibodeaux, Chris Thibodeaux, Terri Pascual, Damon Baudoin and Dwayne Baudoin; and two brothers, Floyd Gallet and John Gallet. He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Lucille Gallet. The family requests that visiting hours be observed Thursday at Delhomme Funeral Home in Maurice from 10:00 am until 10:00 pm and continue Friday at First Baptist Church of Milton from 9:00 am until time of service.
