Leroy Salsman

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 8, 2016 at 10:00 am in Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Leroy Salsman, Jr. beloved father, husband, grandfather and great-grandfather, who passed away peacefully with his family by his side on April 3, 2016 in Jennings, Louisiana at the age of 96. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery. Reverend Dan Edwards, Pastor of St. Jules Catholic Church will be the celebrant of the Funeral Services. Lectors will be Bonnie Oswalt and Annette Trahan. His grandchildren will be the Giftbearers. Survivors include his son Steven Salsman and wife Debbie of Santa Fe, NM/Idaho; daughter-in-law, Janis Salsman of Sugar Land TX, and daughter, Faye Witkowski and husband Charles of Covington, LA; grandchildren, Nicole English, Erica Salsman Kouros ,Brooke Witkowski and Emilie Salsman; great grandchildren, Alexa LaCount, Eleni Kouros, Sofia Kouros, Emmanuela Kouros, AR “Raymond” , Maryam and Khadijah Pennino and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Salsman was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Lucille (Martin) Salsman; his beloved parents, Leroy Sr. and Jeanette LaCour Salsman, son Carol “C.J.” Salsman; brothers, Homer V. and Leo E. Salsman; , sisters, Verbie Landry, Sylvia Gallier, Goldie Murphy; and half-sister, Mildred S. Bennett. Mr. Salsman was a lifelong resident of Lafayette, Louisiana. His commitment and dedication to his craft was evident during his over 20 years as shop foreman at Lafayette Woodworks before his “retirement”. Not to stay in retirement too long, he became the owner of Salsman Tractor Service. Thereafter, Leroy would serve as Steve’s “plant consultant”, his new calling, when Steve opened Salsman’s Plant Farm. Many years were spent with his wife Lucille doing what they loved, together. He enjoyed traveling the roads with Lucille and their friends from the Good Sam’s and Cruisin Cajun’s Motor Home Clubs. The highlight of those years was a trip all the way to Alaska. He loved his vegetable gardening, their card games with lifelong friends, and his many “coffee trips” to the Corner Pantry. He instilled his love of nature and strong work ethic in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all. Mr. Salsman was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 46883 of St. Jules Catholic Church and an Honorary Member of Council 4204 in Sugar Land, Texas. A heartfelt thank you to the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home in Jennings, LA for the wonderful care, compassion, and family atmosphere you have shown Leroy and our family. Their support and love for Leroy has been immeasurable and we are so grateful that “Pop” was with you. The family wishes to express a special thank you to Winter Fontenot who helped care for Mr. Salsman over this past year. We are thankful for your compassion. Another special thanks to Mark Begnaud of Scott, LA for helping with Leroy’s many wood working craft projects and Ronnie Breaux of Lake Charles, LA for the plant projects. The family also expresses their thanks to Amedisys Hopsice Care of Lake Charles for their care of Leroy. Pallbearers are Rene Bordelon, Louis Bordelon, Charles Guilbeau, Toby Salsman, Christopher Salsman and Katry Martin. Honorary Pallbearers are Homer Salsman and Ned Guilbeau. The family requests that visitation be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home on Thursday, April 7, 2016 from 2:00 pm – 9:00 pm with a Rosary being recited at 7:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to the Activity Department of the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home at 1610 Evangeline Rd. Jennings, Louisiana 70546.
