Lessie Lee Wynne

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 am in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Mrs. Edward W. Wynne, Sr. 88, who passed away on April 8, 2011 in Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center. Reverend Chester Arceneaux, Rector of Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, will be Celebrant of the Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Musical selections are: "Amazing Grace", "The Lord's Prayer", and "Let There Be Peace on Earth". Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery at 355 Teurlings Drive at Mount Carmel Drive in Lafayette, LA. Mrs. Wynne was born in Opelousas, Louisiana in 1922, the oldest of 5 children. She graduated from Opelousas High School in 1940 and went on to New Orleans Charity Hospital where she graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1943. In New Orleans while they were both in medical school, she met her husband, the late Dr. Edward W. Wynne, Sr. and they were married in 1943. They eventually settled in Lafayette in 1947 where Mrs. Wynne served as his office nurse and receptionist. They were the parents of 3 children, Edward W. (Boogie) Wynne, Jr., Mrs. Robert (Elizabeth "Betty") Tujaque, Sr., both of Lafayette and Michael D. Wynne, Sr., of Alexandria, Louisiana. She and Dr. Wynne were the grandparents of Mrs. Michael (Rebecca) Taylor, Sr., Christopher T. Smith; Edward W. "EW" Wynne III, James Collin Wynne, Kathryn "Kate" Wynne, Michael D. Wynne, Jr. and Anna E. Wynne. She has 10 great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Harold (Merlene) Martin of Opelousas. Mrs. Wynne was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Edward W. Wynne, Sr., her parents, Henry Lee Whipp and Anna Bihm Whipp, 3 siblings, Henry E. Whipp, Wanda Belle Hastings, and Joseph Bonneal Whipp; and a grandson, Edward W. Wynne, III. Mrs. Wynne's hobbies included the promotion and preservation of the French language and culture, travel, amateur photography, genealogy, volunteering, and collecting cookbooks. Mrs. Wynne has been a strong advocate in helping the Lafayette community. She served as a member of the Lafayette Centennial Commission (1982-1984), Lafayette Charity Hospital Guild for over 25 years ( and helped distribute Christmas presents to the patients for many years). She served on Lafayette Charity Board 32 years, Daughters of the American Revolution and Confederacy, Friends of the Humanities, Over 80's Group, and many other local organizations. She also volunteered as receptionist for 23 years at St. Joseph's Shelter for men in the afternoons and served at St. Joseph's Diner twice a week for 22 years. She was a Member of Toujours Fideles for 23 years. In 1988, she was honored by the Jaycees for volunteerism. Also in 1988 she was honored for her "life's work" in volunteerism by the Acadiana Volunteer Activist. She was honored by the Lafayette Parish Medical Alliance at their last antique show The family requests that visiting hours be observed on Tuesday from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm and will continue on Wednesday from 8:00 am until service time . A rosary will be recited on Tuesday at 7:00 pm in the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Mr. Christopher T. Smith, Mr. Rudi Bourg, Mr. Michael Taylor, Sr., Mr. Nicholas Angelle, Mr. Michael D. Wynne, Jr., Mr. James Collin Wynne and Dr. Elmo Laborde.
