Lily Peterson

Lily Hernandez Peterson entered into rest on Thursday, November 6, 2014. She was born to Bertha Lagneaux and Saul Hernandez on August 21, 1921 in the Judice Community near Lafayette. She attended and graduated from Judice High School. She went on to study and to receive her nursing credentials in Iowa in 1943. Afterwards, she returned to the Lafayette area where she lived and raised her family, in addition to serving the community in the medical profession for over 50 years. She resided in the Judice Community until 2005 when she moved to Cornerstone Village South Assisted Living until her passing. Her life was filled with dedication and service. As an active member of the American Medical Assistant Association, she carried out the duties of President of the Louisiana Chapter. Lily was a charter member of Grace Presbyterian Church. With enthusiasm, love, and dedication, she served the congregation in a wide range of capacities, including Deacon and Elder. Through membership in Codofil, Mrs. Peterson actively strived to further the use of her first language, French, in Louisiana. She acted as corresponding secretary of the organization. In addition to helping the Lafayette community through her involvement in a number of women's philanthropic organizations and activities, she volunteered until her 80's, delivering Meals on Wheels and working at St. Joseph's Diner. She will be remembered by family, friends and acquaintances for her extraordinary kindness and generosity of spirit. She was truly one of God's Angels on Earth. She is survived by her daughter, Christina "Chris" Peterson Sanchez and her husband Paul of Dripping Springs, TX; and a brother, Turney Hernandez of Newark, Delaware. She leaves behind four grandchildren, Sean Thompson of Boerne, TX; John Thompson of Duson, LA; Michael Sanchez of Dallas, TX; and Megan Sanchez Pinchback of Dripping Springs, TX. She is also survived by seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Harry John "Pete" Peterson, Russell Hebert, and dear friend and companion, Nick Martin; one daughter, Diana Peterson Thompson and her husband Tommy; parents, Saul and Bertha Lagneaux Hernandez; and siblings, Dr. Thomas Hernandez, Theo Hernandez, Dr. Teme Hernandez, Dr. Travis Hernandez and Murley Hernandez LeBlanc. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, November 10, 2014, at 10:00 AM in Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers in Lafayette; Entombment will be in St. Basil Mausoleum in Judice. Reverend John Wamsley, Pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church in Lafayette, will conduct the funeral services. The family requests that visiting hours be observed on Sunday, November 9, 2014, in Delhomme Funeral Home on Bertrand from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with a Scripture Wake Service at 7:00 PM.
