Marie Murrell

Mrs. Marie Murrell, a resident of Lafayette, Louisiana, passed away surrounded by the love of her family. Born in Rayne, Louisiana, she was the daughter of the late Edmond Tabb and the former Eva Simon. Marie met her beloved husband, John Dillard (“Dill”) Murrell, while attending the University of Southwestern Louisiana as a music major. A gifted musician, she played both the flute and piano in the concert band. Marie and Dill married in 1957 and began their family while still in college. The couple later settled in Saline, Michigan, where Dill worked with the Environmental Protection Agency and Marie worked for the Great Lakes Basin Commission. Together, they became deeply involved in community life, performing with the Saline Area Players and the community concert band, as well as participating in local theater productions. Marie was a devoted mother of six, balancing two jobs while raising her family. She was admired for her tireless work ethic, her love of music and theater, and her exceptional talent in the kitchen. She passed down her French Acadian cooking traditions to her children while creating a legacy of Cajun food and music. After her time in government service, Marie built her own successful business as an executive secretary, serving CEOs, lawyers, and doctors across Washtenaw County. Following Dill’s passing in 2004, she returned to Lafayette in 2005 to be near friends and enjoy the warmth of her Louisiana roots while continuing her business as executive secretarial services. In 2014, Marie suffered a severe stroke that left her partially paralyzed. She spent the remainder of her life at Maison De Lafayette and is survived by her six children: Mark R. Murrell, Cynthia M. Davis, Karen E. (Ted) Klemm, Brian A. Murrell, Steven R. (Dawn) Murrell, and Simone A. Murrell; her grandchildren: Adam Edwards, Michael Edwards, Daniel Davis, Lenny Davis, Brenton Murrell, and Leah Murrell; and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, John Dillard “Dill” Murrell; her parents, Edmond and Eva Tabb; and her brother, Vincent Tabb.
