Marjorie Ann Currey

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at 11:00 am in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers, for Marjorie Ann Nelson Currey, 82, who passed away Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at Lafayette Care Center. Reverend Jan Hollaway, Pastor of First United Methodist Church will conduct the funeral services. Graveside services will be held on Monday, May 24, 2010 at 2:00 pm at Dawson Cemetery in Dawson, TX. She will be buried alongside her parents and sister. Marjorie was born in Dawson, Texas, Navarro County to Vernie Johnson Nelson and William Martin Nelson on December 10, 1927. She graduated Valedictorian at Dawson Elementary and Valedictorian at Dawson High School. She was voted Best All-Round Girl by the faculty. She graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from The University of Texas at Austin with a BA in Plan II Honors Program and a Major in Pure Mathematics. She taught High School Mathematics in Vanderbilt, Texas. On August 26, 1951, she married Billie George Currey. She taught High School Mathematics at Gillis High School and La Grange High School in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Marjorie was involved in many volunteer activities. She was Cub Scout den mother in Lake Charles, a founder and past president of the Lyseum, a Federated Women's Study Club, a founder of The Chorean, a couples dance club, member, choir, member and soloist, Sunday School and Vacation Bible School pianist at First United Methodist Church in Lake Charles. She was teaching Mathematics at McNeese State University when Bill was transferred to Lafayette, Louisiana. She won first place in Vouge fashion Sewing Contest in 7th District Federated Women's Club while in Lake Charles. She was a member and past president of En Avant, a women's civic club. She was a member and past president of the Mayor's Commission on the Needs of Women. She was a founder and long-time board member of the Rape Crisis Center and served on the Salvation Army board for the Battered Women's Shelter. She served on the Visions 2000 Commission for the City of Lafayette, served as the Environmental Services Committee for the City of Lafayette, founder and past president of Lafayette Greenbelt, Inc., member and past president of the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Southwest Louisiana, was the Representative in Southwest Louisiana for Scholastic Publishing Co. She was a life-long choir member and soloist for First United Methodist Church and also Sunday School pianist and sanctuary pre-service music. She was a member of United Methodist Women. Marjorie served on the board of Faith House. She received a Mayor's Distinguished Citizen Award on the 10th Anniversary of the Mayor's Commission on the Needs of Women. She was recognized by the Mayor's Commission on the Needs of Women as a Women of Achievement in 1982. She received a Certificate of Awards for Outstanding Achievement by the Rape Crisis Center Advisory Council in 1983. She received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Mayor's Commission on the Needs of Women in 1986. She served as chairman of the Administrative Board at First United Methodist Church and served on the Board of Trustees and the Finance Committee. She was a United Methodist Women Circle Chairman. She was an avid bridge player, gardener, and life-long member of the American Association of University Women and honored with a $500 named gift to Educational Foundation. She cruised the west and east coast of the U.S. and Mexico, the Caribbean and Europe. She also enjoyed sewing and interior decorating and kept in shape at Red's Health Club for over 25 years. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Billie George Currey, her son, David Nelson Currey, and daughter, Laura Diane Currey McManus. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Matthew Jonathan Currey, Danielle Leigh McManus and twins, Lauren Ann McManus and Devon Andrew McManus. She will be greatly missed. The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday and will continue on Saturday from 9:00 am until time of services at Delhomme Funeral Home of Lafayette.
