Mary Elizabeth Davies Hamilton

It is with great joy we celebrate the life of Mary Elizabeth Davies Hamilton. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 pm on Monday, October 6, 2008 in the Delhomme Chapel of the flowers for Mary Elizabeth Hamilton, 88, who passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at Baywind Village in League City, Texas. Reverend Steve Horn, Pastor of First Baptist Church of Lafayette, will conduct the funeral services. Interment will be held at Lafayette Protestant Cemetery. Mary Elizabeth Davies Hamilton was born on July 24, 1920 in Crowley. She was the third child of Lewis Morris Davies and Byddig Olwen Williams. Mary Elizabeth grew up in Crowley where she graduated as Valedictorian from Crowley High School. She later attended SLI (now University of Louisiana at Lafayette) where she graduated as Salutatorian with a bachelor's degree in commerce in three years. She then moved to Houston, Texas where she worked for Sun Oil Company as an administrative assistant. Near the close of the war she married the love of her life, Herbert A. Hamilton, who returned to teaching after completing his tour in the Pacific. The couple later lived in New York and London in support of his doctoral and post-doctoral pursuits. It was during her time in London in the 1950's that Mary Elizabeth researched and renewed Welsh family ties. This evolved into a lifetime of relationships and exchanges across the sea and a love of the Welsh people, hymns and culture. She and Herbert enjoyed 44 years of marriage. She was the ever-supportive wife and enjoyed hosting and attending the many functions associated with his position as the first Dean of the College of Commerce. Always improving herself, Mary Elizabeth studied music and French at UL in her spare time. Sharing a love of music, she and Herbert often accompanied each other ' she on the piano and he on the flute. She attained a high level of fluency in French perfecting her pronunciation and broadening her studies to include French fashion and cuisine. In addition to preparing many gourmet meals she also had a passion for gardening; producing vegetables for her dinners and flowers for the table. Mary Elizabeth or 'Tante' as she was lovingly called by her family was a friend to all who knew her. She cherished time with her family. She will be dearly missed by all whose lives she has touched through the years. She knew the importance of treating a person with respect. If she had met you before no matter the depth of your relationship you can be assured the next occasion would involve an inquiry about you as a person and your family members ' often asking about them by name. Mary Elizabeth was a member of Delta Theta Sigma (now known as Alpha Omicron Pi); Phi Kappa Phi; chapter Y of PEO (a philanthropic educational organization); the Faculty Wives Club at UL; the lunch bunch of Bendel; and a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Lafayette. Her faith in Christ was evidenced by her concern for others throughout her life and her belief that all things could be accomplished through Him. It is in this knowledge of her deep faith that we are comforted, for she is certainly in the hands of our Lord. She is survived by her nephew, Thomas L. Davies and his wife, Betty Ann Clarkson; her great nephews, Christopher Kent Davies and his wife Kathryn, Timothy Bryan Davies and his wife Kathleen and Thomas Matthew Davies; and her great, great nephews and niece: Reid Garret Davies, Cameron Alexander Davies, Jack Treston Davies, Bennett Hamilton Davies, and Anne Elizabeth Davies. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Dr. Herbert A. Hamilton; her parents, Lewis Morris Davies & Byddig Olwen Williams; her brother and sister, Thomas L. Davies, Sr. and Marguerite Davies Penner; and her niece, Olwen Penner Pfeiffer. he family requests that visiting hours be observed on Sunday evening from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm and on continue on Monday from 12:00 pm until the time of service. Pallbearers will be John Hamilton 'Jack' Must, Dr. Anthony P. 'Andy' Blalock, Paul Joseph 'P. J.' Blalock, J. J. Burdin, Jr., Marshall Scott Collins, Christopher Kent Davies, Timothy Bryan Davies and Thomas Matthew Davies. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Herbert A. and Mary Elizabeth Hamilton Scholarship Fund of the UL ' Lafayette Foundation.
