Murray S. Couvillon

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, May 18, 2009 at 10:00 AM in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Murray Couvillon, 88, who passed away on May 16, 2009 at 3:05 AM at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center. Interment will take place in Calvary Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum of the Resurrection in Lafayette, LA. Lectors shall include Jeanne R. Mathews (niece) and Dawn C. Fontenot (niece). Gift bearers shall include his granddaughters, Andrea, Aime' and Kelsey Couvillon. Mr. Couvillon, a resident of Lafayette, LA, was the son of the late Edward Simeon Couvillon of Moreauville, LA and the former Marie Tassin of Moreauville, LA. He was born on September 18, 1920. Before his retirement in 1984, he worked for Cleco and Trans Louisiana Gas Company for 37 years having served as manager for 20 years in Lafayette. Mr. Couvillon was a graduate of SLI, now UL, of Lafayette. Prior to that time, he served proudly in the U.S. Navy as a radioman in the LST 466 and 898 during World War II. Aboard these ships, he was involved in 12 invasions in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. Murray was also very active in various community organizations to include the American Legion and VFW. He was Commander of the Natchitoches, LA VFW Post. He served as chairman of the Civic Affairs Committee of the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce in 1972-1973. In 1973-1974, he served as president of the Kiwanis Club of Lafayette. He also served two years as Vice President of AARP chapter 4197 in Lafayette. He is currently a member of the Knights of Columbus Council Member 3470. He also served as a Grand Knight in 1988 and 1989. He served as Vice-President of District 29 Toastmasters International. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marie M. Rabalais; one daughter, Elizabeth C. Willis of Lafayette; two sons, Gary C. Couvillon of Shreveport and Paul A. Couvillon of Lafayette. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Shannon W. Jones, Bradley W. Willis, Stephen J. Couvillon, Kelsey Couvillon, and Andrea and Aime' Couvillon; numerous nieces and nephews; numerous great-nieces and nephews; two sisters in-law, Edith Rabalais of Alexandria, LA and Joyce Rabalais of Buna, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Simeon Couvillon and Marie Tassin; one sister, Sybil C. Dufour and two brothers, Alvin and James Couvillon. The family requests that visiting hours be observed on Monday from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Delhomme Funeral Home in Lafayette. They will reopen for viewing at 8:00 AM Tuesday until the time of the service. Pallbearers will be Bradley Willis, Stephen Couvillon, Douglas Couvillon, Don Couvillon, Dr. Scott Rabalais, and Sean Rabalais. Honorary Pallbearers will be Harry McCauley, Edgar Gremillion, Chris Duplechain, Levett Paul Dufour, Jr., and Donnie Padgitt. Mr. Couvillon will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
