Nelda Thomas Bernard

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, October 21, 2013 in the Delhomme Funeral Home Chapel of the Flowers for Nelda Thomas Bernard, 94, who passed away on Friday, October 18, 2013 at 6:15 pm at her residence. Reverend Michael Russo, Pastor of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, will conduct the funeral services. Entombment will take place in Holy Mary Mother of God Mausoleum. Mrs. Bernard, a native of St. Martinville, was a resident of Lafayette for 63 years. She was the daughter of the late Hackett Thomas and the former Bernadette Bonin Thomas. She is survived by her husband of 72 years Charles Bernard Jr. She is also survived her daughter, Linda Cucullu and her husband Carl; her sons, Neil, Keith and his wife Marcia; and Chuck and his wife, Renee. She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren, and her 11 great grandchildren. Nelda graduated from S.L.I. in 1937. She taught school in St. Martin Parish. She moved to Lafayette in 1950. She and her husband were part owners of Camp Choctaw, an educational and recreational day camp. She loved to travel with her husband and family, visiting every state in the United States and seven foreign countries. She especially liked traveling with friends on cruises. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She also enjoyed weekly games of Bouree' with friends. Nelda was a loving wife and mother, a fantastic cook who thought that everything was better with gravy on it, and a woman who lived and loved her Catholic faith. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Howard Thomas and one sister, Hilda Thomas Reynaud. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home on Bertrand Drive on Sunday, October 20, 2013 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm on Sunday, October 20, 2013 evening in the funeral home. Visiting hours will continue on Monday, October 21, 2013 from 11:00 am until the time of service. The family would especially like to thank Momma's dedicated and loving caregivers who have loved her and cared for her like she was their own mother, Juanita Sisk, Virginia Broussard, Lisa Alexander, and Ashley Carter.
