Nelia Myrhaugen

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at Asbury United Methodist Church for Nelia Myrhaugen, 87, who passed away on Sunday, June 22, 2008 at Heart Hospital of Lafayette. Reverend Ira Robinson, Associate Pastor of Asbury United Methodist Church, will conduct the memorial service. Mrs. Myrhaugen, a lifelong resident of Abbeville, was the daughter of the late Nicaise Theriot and the former Anise Luquette both of Abbeville. Nelia graduated from Abbeville High School in 1936. She received a Bachelor degree in Home Economics from University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1972. She was honored as outstanding alumna in the home economics department. Later she was honored as outstanding alumna of the College of Applied Science. She was a generous donor to the University and the Alumni House, donating scholarships in memory of Lance Corporal Daniel Lewis. She also donated funds to create the Hospitality Room at the Alumni House of ULL. She also donated many of her original paintings to the Alumni House. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church where she served as President of the Women Association. She was also a member of the Cokesbury Choir, the Friendship Sunday school Class, the Clara Ray Hospitality Circle serving as chairperson and telephone chairperson, the Louisiana Horticulture Research Society, the Lafayette Garden Club, the Lafayette Concert Band, the Lafayette History Museum, the Natural Museum, and the Paul and Lula University Art Museum. She enjoyed reading, sewing, gardening and painting. Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Lynn Lewis of Houma, and Evelyn Ann Lewis of Harrisburg, Mississippi; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and one sister, Velta Hebert of Abbeville. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Dr. James W. Lewis; her second husband, George Myrhaugen; three sons, Dr. James H. Lewis, Lance Corporal Daniel Lewis, and David Lewis; three daughters, Pearl Rae Lewis, Beatrice Ann Lewis, and Jane Ellen Lewis; two sisters, Benith Stewart, and Ruby Trahan; and three brothers, Walter 'Lightning' Theriot, Lester Theriot, and Pierre Roy Theriot. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 9:00 am until time of service at Asbury United Methodist Church.
