Nell Olivia Morris Jacobs

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, February 23, 2007 in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Nell Olivia Morris Jacobs, devoted wife of Harold J. Jacobs M.D., who died February 19, 2007. The Reverend Karl Wood will officiate at the services. Interment will follow at Fountain Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Lafayette. Nell Grew up in Madisonville, LA and was a graduate of Lyon High School in Covington, LA. Following her graduation she entered the School of Nursing at New Orleans Charity Hospital where she received her certificate as a Registered Nurse May 10, 1949. She continued to work at 'Big Charity' as the head nurse of a large orthopedic ward until well after her marriage to Harold in January 1950. She and her husband moved to Lafayette in July 1951 where they lived happily, built their dream home and raised a family. Harold will attest to the fact that she was not a very good cook when they married, but through diligence and the love of cooking, she became an outstanding chef. Her large collection of cook books from around the world gives evidence to this fact. She loved flowers of all kinds, especially roses. Because of this love, she had a large rose bed and often had fresh-cut roses throughout the home. Her yard is filled with over 200 azaleas and her greenhouse at one time housed more than 500 orchids. She was past member of the Lafayette Orchid Society and an active participant in some of the local flower shows. One of her favorite outings was attending orchid shows in other places, including one in Costa Rica. Traveling was another of her intense interests. This included several trips to Europe, cruises to the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, as well as many trips in this country, Canada and Mexico. She loved to dance and always enjoyed the activities of the Krewe of Gabriel. She was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International Foundation and was an attendee at the Rotary International Convention held in Nice, France. In addition to all these attributes, she was a wonderful role model for her sons, daughters and grandchildren, imparting them with pearls of wisdom that will never be forgotten. She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Harold J. Jacobs M.D.; two sons, Charles E. Jacobs of Oklahoma City, OK, Carl D. Jacobs and wife Darlene of Aiken, SC; two daughters, Julie J. Harris of Birmingham, AL and husband William, and Janelle J. Sprick of Kenner, LA and her husband Clarence, as well as nine grandchildren, Heidi J. Jordan, Bradley Jacobs, Hayley Jacobs, Leslee Jacobs, Joseph Harris, Olivia Sprick, Jessica Sprick, Nicholas Harris and David Harris. She was preceded in death by her parents, the former Eleanor Olivia Roland and Berlin S. Morris; three brothers, Charles Morris, Roland Morris and Ray Morris; and one son, Harold Jacobs, III. She was a very loving and devoted woman who had many friends. She will be greatly missed. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Drs. Albert Corne and Kenneth Entes for their excellent care and consideration and to the nursing staff at Lafayette General Medical Canter for their attentiveness to her needs. Pallbearers will be Charles Jacobs, Carl Jacobs, William Harris, Clarence Sprick, Bradley Jacobs, and Joseph Harris. Honorary Pallbearer will be Patrick Jordan. Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, 312-6c Guilbeau Road, Lafayette, LA 70506, to help further their research in the prevention and management of heart disease.
