Neva Schexnayder Ducote

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, April 1, 2024 in St. Mary Mother of the Church for Neva Marie Schexnayder Ducote, 89, who passed away on March 24, 2024. Fr. Cedric Sonnier, Pastor of St. Mary Mother of the Church, will be Celebrant of the Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Burial will take place in Holy Mary Mother of God Cemetery. Ms. Neva, a resident of Lafayette, was the daughter of the late Cornelius Schexnayder and the former Eugenie Leblanc. She was one of nine children who grew up in Arnaudville. As a child she participated in plays of Auguste “Nonco” Pelafigue at the Little Flower Auditorium. After high school, she attended TH Harris and became a nurse (LPN). In 1957, Neva married Lester L. Ducote Jr. at age 21 and together they had five children. She was an active parishioner at St. Mary’s Catholic Church for many years serving as a reader, bible study leader & Eucharistic Minister there & at Lafayette General. She loved reading, writing, gardening, music, dancing, and spending time with family & friends. She is survived by her son, Lester Jean Ducote (Ellen); her daughters, Neva Ducote Seago MD, Ellen Ducote Stokes (Mike), and Virginia Ducote Remeny (Merle); grandchildren, Alexander Ducote (Lillian), Benjamin Seago, Sara Seago, Lauren Seago, Nicole Seago, Julia Remeny, Emma Remeny, and Jacob Stokes; great-granddaughter, Lula Rae Ducote; siblings, Eddie Schexnayder, James Schexnayder, Earl Schexnayder (Brenda), Audrey Schexnayder Miller (Ernest), and Marie Schexnayder Stelly (Lionel); and many nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Mark James Ducote; granddaughter, Audrey Ellen Ducote; parents, Cornelius and Eugenie Schexnayder; siblings, Calvin Schexnayder, CJ Schexnayder, and Doris Schexnayder Hollier. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at St. Mary Mother of the Church on Monday, April 1, 2024 beginning at 8:30 AM. A Rosary will be prayed at 9:30 AM on Monday morning in the church. Visitation will continue, following the Rosary, until the time of service. Pallbearers will be Lester Ducote, Alexander Ducote, Benjamin Seago, Jacob Stokes, Mike Stokes, and Merle Remeny. The family request memorial and honoraria giving to the Catholic Charities of Acadiana.
