Phoebe Alice Vermillion

Phoebe Doucet Vermillion passed away peacefully on Friday, January 30, 2015, at Lafayette General Hospital, in the presence of her four loving children. Phoebe was born in Carencro, Louisiana, on March 13, 1925. Her parents, Maxim D. Doucet and Mary J. Mills Doucet, preceded her in death, as did her beloved husband of 64 years, Byron C. Vermillion, Jr. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Rosemary Singleton Logan, and her son-in-law, John Robbins. Phoebe is survived by her children, Barney Vermillion (Sandra Vermillion), Missy Barry (Dr. Robin Barry), Carol Vermillion Robbins, Bill Vermillion, and by Patty Naomi Smith, who was like a daughter to her. She is also survived by her 11 grandchildren, Jason and Jennifer Baugh, Chris and Jen Baugh, Dan and Erin Barry, Dr. Rachel Barry, Renee Barry, Savannah Robbins, Clay Vermillion, and Chloe St. Germain-Vermillion; and three great-grandchildren, Juniper Baugh, and Max and Beau Barry. Phoebe was a brilliant, dynamic woman, who managed a successful career at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now UL) while raising four children and caring for aging parents and in-laws. She graduated from Lafayette High School as Valedictorian of the class of 1942. She married the love of her life, Byron Vermillion, Jr., in 1948, after her graduation from the Southwestern Louisiana Institute in 1946. She worked and taught in the Louisiana University system for over 25 years, and she was a proud member of Les Deux Douzaines, Junior League, and the DAR. After her retirement from USL, she was involved in research and development for the living history museum, Vermilionville. Phoebe loved her family, food, fun, laughter, and especially the beautiful white beaches of Alabama and Florida. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Her family would like to give special thanks to her caring sitters, Mattie Citizen, Tina Diaz, Charlotte Porter, Tammy Sonnier, and especially to Hilda Dean, who has helped take care of our mother and our family for many years. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Sunday, February 8, 2015, at 2:00 PM in Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers in Lafayette. Visitation will be observed in Delhomme Funeral Home on Bertrand on Saturday, February 7, 2015 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, with a rosary led by lifelong friend, Beverly Latimer, at 3:00 PM. Visitation will continue on Sunday from 11:00 AM until the service. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery with her beloved husband, parents, and sister.
