A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30PM on Friday, September 7, 2018 in Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist for Richard Owens, Jr., 72, who passed away on September 2, 2018. Burial will take place in Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Cemetery. Richard attended North Texas State University in Denton, TX and Texas Wesleyan College in Fort Worth, TX. as well as Ocean Corporation Dive School in Houston, TX. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Hospital Corpsman during the Vietnam Era from 1965 to 1971. Richard worked 44 years of subsea installation of oil field related construction and consulting. His hobbies included motorcycling, woodworking, sport shooting (long range rifle and sporting clays) and sailing. He was a supporter of visual art and performing arts and a writer of haiku. Richard was a devout Catholic and a member of Knights of Columbus, Council 1286. He loved his family and friends very much. Richard, a resident of Lafayette, was the son of the late Richard Owens, Sr. and the former Helen Fortney of Fort Worth. He is survived by his wife, Mary "Cissy" Francis Whipp; two daughters, Marleyna Lynne Dinan and Zia Pearl Owens; two step-daughters, Ciel Lorraine Dafford and Miriam Blythe Hellmann; grandchildren, Ashley Dinan Winans, Kelsey Dinan Zahn, Caitlin Dinan Hight, Patrick Dinan, and Maxwell Boone Hellman, III; great-grandchildren, Hayden Lee Zahn, Brayson Wayne Hight, Bayler Gregory Hight and new baby Hight scheduled to be born on Richard's Birthday, September 25th. He was preceded in death by his parents. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home - Bertrand on Thursday, September 6, 2018 from 5:00PM to 9:00PM. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00PM on Thursday evening in the funeral home by the Knights of Columbus. Visiting hours will continue Friday from 8:00AM until the time of service. Pallbearers will be Greg Dinan, Patrick Dinan, "Jim" A. Maedgen, Grant Winans, Cullis Zahn and Justin Hight. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Knights of Columbus, Council 1286 and Robert Rosen. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Knights of Columbus, Council 1286. The family would like to thank the staff of St. Joseph's Hospice for their compassionate care.
