Roger Walton Cavaness

Funeral services will be held at a 10:00 am Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, February 14, 2008 in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Roger W. Cavaness, 63, who passed away Saturday, February 9, 2008 in Lafayette. Reverend Steven C. LeBlanc, Pastor of St. Pius X Catholic Church, will be Celebrant of the Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Musical selections will be provided by Mrs. Kepler P. Ducote of Mandeville. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Cavaness was born in Eunice, Louisiana on November 3, 1944. He attended Menard High School in Alexandria; Academy of the Immaculate Conception in Opelousas; and University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Roger had a long and successful career in radio broadcasting beginning as a sixteen year old disc jockey at KEUN in Eunice. Roger worked in Lafayette, New Iberia, New Orleans, Memphis, Mobile, and Alexandria. His career progressed into radio station management and ownership. He owned stations in Mobile, Lafayette, Alexandria, and Eunice. Roger enjoyed traveling, cooking, gardening, and spending time with family and friends. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rotary and the National Association of Broadcasters, where he served a two-year term as Board Member. Survivors include his loving, devoted wife, Lydia Ducote Cavaness of Lafayette; his daughter, Shelley and husband, Tom Boulliu of Paris, France; his mother, Sister Dorothy Cavaness, O.C. of Mount St. Benedict, Trinidad; his stepdaughter, Heather and husband, Camille Gravel, IV of Lafayette; his granddaughter, Myah Gravel; his two sisters, D.C. Dunham of Bay City, Texas, and Joel Sellers of New Orleans; his brothers-in-law, Gerard Sellers, and David Dunham; and his nieces and nephews, Andrew Cavaness of Alexandria, John Byron Cavaness of Alabama, Andrew Grace of Alabama, Sarah Jones of Atlanta, Jessica Jones of Los Angeles, and Jacqueline Jones of New Iberia. He was preceded in death by his father, Walton Cavaness; and his brother, J.H. Cavaness. The family requests that visiting hours be observed on Wednesday from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm and continue Thursday from 8:00 am until the time of service. A rosary will be recited Wednesday at 7:00 pm in the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Alex Andrus, III, Charles Westerchill, A.E. Craig, Edsel Deville, Thomas Withrow, Camille Gravel, IV, Brian Cespiva, Peter Hazelhurst, and John Byron Cavaness.
