Shirley Angelle Stelly Stobart of Lafayette, LA died on Tuesday, October 23, 2018. Shirley was born in Arnaudville, LA on October 26, 1936 to the late Clovis and Elita Guidry Angelle, preceded also by former husbands James D. Stelly and Edward H. Stobart. Shirley is survived by her two children: Daughter Maureen “Moe” Francis and husband Larry Whatley of Lafayette, LA; Maureen’s sons Amir “A. J.” Francis (wife Ariel and daughter Lily) of Lafayette, LA, Chris Francis (wife Chrissy and their sons Gage and Gavin) of Opelousas, LA.; Son Dr. Phillip Lyle Stelly, his wife Nancy of Carencro, LA and their daughters Dr. Heather Stelly Cutbirth (husband Dr. Patrick Cutbirth and son Wyatt James) of Lafayette, LA and Lauren C. Stelly of New Port News, Virginia. Shirley is survived by her sister Grace Theriot, husband Woodrow of Cecilia, LA. Brother Carroll Angelle of Stephensville, LA, three nieces: Renita Rogers, Naomi Marais, Karice Angelle; three nephews: Ji Angelle, Ashton Angelle and Kerwin Theriot. Five great nephews and one great niece. Special friends Mark, Toula, Jed and Evan from Madrid, Spain; she was a Cajun Grandma to them. Shirley was a wonderful mother. She loved and nurtured her son and daughter and was proud of them. Her grandchildren were the joy of her life. To them she was “Granny Sweetheart”. The best times were to have her family on Sunday and holidays for dinners. She was a wonderful cook, seamstress and was meticulous about her house and yard. She was a dedicated nurse and a devoted Catholic. She loved to cook, sew, travel and dance. Shirley attended Cecilia High School and T. H. Harris Vocational School. She was a retired surgical nurse at Lafayette General Medical Center. Professional positions include: Nurse Assistance to Harold Jacobs, MD and the late Mims Mitchell, MD. She also assisted the late J Robert Rivet, MD, Neurosurgeon concurrent with full time employment at Lafayette General Hospital Surgical Department from which she retired. Shirley was a very compassionate nurse specializing in Neuro, OBGYN and general surgery. She was active in professional organizations-State, National and District Chapters of Federation of Licensed Practical Nurses, member of the Board of Directors, nomination committee, ways and means committee, Vice President and State President of LPN Association and Nurse of the Year 1979. Civic organizations include American Business Women’s Association; National and Local Chapter, corresponding secretary, vice president, elected Woman of the Year in 1976. She represented ABWA in Salt Lake City, Utah, attended four national conventions and three post conventions out of the country for extended learning experience. Also belonged to Society to Petroleum Engineers Auxiliary. She was a member of the International Trades of Acadiana representing Acadiana at the World’s Fair in Costa Rica and El Salvador where she toured the hospital to observe cardiovascular and neurosurgical procedures. While in Costa Rica, Shirley was invited to dinner with the President and the First Lady at their home which was an honor. Shirley visited Bogota, Columbia while her late husband was employed by British Petroleum where she assisted a plastic surgeon to reattach his finger (even with limited Spanish). She always said that it was an unforgettable experience to assist a surgeon in a foreign country. Shirley traveled to Canada, Brazil, Spain, Honduras, Gibraltar, Morocco, London, Paris, France, Germany, The Bahamas, Cancun, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Mexico, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas Virgin Islands, St. Maarten, St. Barts, Antigua, West Indies and many U.S. States. She even rode a camel in Morocco. Thanks for the good care of Drs. Mike Alexander, Paul Breaux and Angela Mayeux-Hebert, MedSource Care, Kindred Healthcare, Grace Hospice and my family, friends and caregivers who were the best. There will be a Catholic Memorial Mass at 11 AM on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cecilia. A visitation will be held from 9 AM until time of service. Interment of cremains will be held at St. Joseph Mausoleum.
