Stanley Halpin

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:30 PM on Friday, February 16, 2024 at Delhomme Chapel of Flowers for Stanley A. Halpin, Jr., 82, who passed away on February 8, 2024. Stanley, a resident of Lafayette, was the son of the late Stanislaus Halpin, Sr. and the former Edna Rogers. Stanley was born and raised in Lafayette, La. He graduated from Cathedral High School and attained a bachelor’s degree from SLI (now UL,) in Political Science. He later completed a law degree at Tulane University in New Orleans and a PhD in Political Science at George Washington University in Washington DC. In the early years of his career, he was an avid crusader for the enforcement of the Civil Rights Act and later, the Voting Rights Act. He successfully argued scores of cases, some of them before the Supreme Court. Some of his cases resulted in Supreme Court decisions that continue to uphold the cause of voting rights to this day. In 1983, Stanley received The Benjamin Smith Civil Liberties Award from the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana. He worked for a time as Director of the Farm Workers Legal Assistance Project of Acadiana Legal Service Corporation in Lafayette, La. and later became a professor of Constitutional Law at Southern University Law Center, a position he enjoyed for 27 years. Draughon and husband, Shane, Marisa T. Good and husband, Justin; sons, Vincent J. Toups and wife, Shelley, and Andrew Toups; grandchildren, Jada Crossley, Vivian Patten, Turing Good, and Felix Toups. He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter, Avery Shayne Draughon. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers - Bertrand on Friday, February 16, 2024 from 11:00 AM until the time of service.
