Following the services, a private, short graveside service will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. She contracted cancer in her early forties and her determination to survive got her through a disease that killed most women during that time. She was known for her gentle ways--gentle, yet firm enough to accomplish the task at hand. She worked for the Louisiana Department of Labor, where she would work tirelessly as a placement representative, finding the right job for those needing it. She loved to find jobs for people that had lost a job. She finally retired, proud of her accomplishments in that title. She loved to travel. Before the fall that broke her hip just before a planned trip to the Netherlands, she would take cruises and trips to Canada, London, Egypt, Israel, Alaska and many states to view Nature. Until her move to Rosewood Retirement Community, she was an active member of the First United Methodist Church. Dot was a “Special Member of the United Methodist Women of the World”. She had been a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Grace Agate society and various other projects at the Church. She was a kid’s favorite teacher every summer for Vacation Bible School. An active member of the school PTA, she was always ready to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed. She was preceded by her husband, Holmes Thurmond Jr.; a son Tritos (Mary Ann) Thurmond and a granddaughter, Chelsea Thurmond. She is survived by her children Robert “Butch,” Charles “Chuck” (Bobby Sue) and Mae Beth (Marion) Mills, and six grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Miss Dot leaves behind family, friends and caregivers that will hold her in their memories forever. Pallbearers will be son-in-law Marion Mills, grandsons Sebastian Thurmond and Mac Thurmond, great-grandson Kyle LeJeune, and great-granddaughters, Keirsten LeJeune and Georgia Brady. Remembrances may be made in lieu of flowers to First United Methodist Church (fumc-lafayette.org or 337-233-3812) in Dot’s name or Salvation Army of Lafayette (salvationarmyusa or 337-235-2407). The family wishes to express special thanks to the loving staff at Rosewood Assisted Living and Bridgeway Healthcare & Hospice. Personal condolences may be sent to the Thurmond family at www.delhommefuneralhome.com. Delhomme Funeral Home, 1011 Bertrand Drive, Lafayette, LA is in charge of funeral arrangements.
