The family will begin receiving visitors at 9:30 AM on Saturday, May 8, 2021 at Vineyard Church of Lafayette. Pastor Gannon Lamson, Senior Pastor of Vineyard Church of Lafayette, will conduct the funeral services. Mr. McDowell, a resident of Lafayette, was the son of the late Russell McDowell and the former Evelyn Perkins. Kevin grew up in a loving family and spent his early life in Crookston, MN. When he was in 5th grade the family moved to Hibbing Minnesota. He left home at 21 years old and moved to South Louisiana. He met the love of his life, Susan in 1980 and they were married in 1987. Kevin will be remembered by all as a loving and devoted husband and father. He was a loyal friend to more people than even we know and so many of his friendships were lifelong. His love for family and friends knew no bounds and of course his quick wit and sense of humor were legendary. If he ever called, you a “Wingnut” you can be sure he loved you! Twenty-five years ago, Kevin committed his heart to Jesus and had the gift of faith beyond measure. He was a “warrior” in the Spirit and never passed up an opportunity to tell anyone who would listen, about Jesus. One of his greatest joys was to speak the simple truth of salvation through Jesus; from death into life, available to all, if they would merely confess with their mouth and believe in their heart they would be saved. Kevin, along with Susan led a home group for over ten years. Teaching the Word of God, ministering love, and deliverance to those broken by the heartaches of life. As a group leader he prayed faithfully for those under his care and encouraged them to believe in the power of God’s love, to heal, deliver and save. This is the way Kevin walked out his salvation – in real and tangible ways. One of his favorite scriptures is: Isaiah 61:1-3 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,[a] 2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, 3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor. Shortly before his time as a group leader was nearing the end, the Lord called to Kevin, along with Susan to get involved in the youth group. He spent two years, as the Vineyard Youth Pastor, and faithfully ministered to the kids, teaching them the Word of God, urging them to seek God above all else, find out what the Lord was calling them to do and then go do it! Soon after he handed over the reigns of the youth group his heart to turned to missions. He was fortunate to have the opportunity to go on several mission trips to Mexico. These “God Missions” brought him so much joy. He loved children and they always flocked to him; he always carried candy in his pockets! Another joy of his life; was spending time with his family and friends. He especially loved spending time outdoors with his son Keegan, his daughter Jillian and all his of buddies’ fishing, four-wheeling, duck hunting and deer hunting. He was a pool shark, a card shark, and a wonderful cook. He enjoyed making gumbo and boiling crawfish for family and friends. Many can attest, he had his recipes down to a science! The last couple of days before his passing he told our daughter Jillian he was seeing angels and seeing glimpses of heaven. In our hearts we wanted to believe the Lord sent his angels to bring him comfort; none of us could have imagined they were sent to usher him home. He now stands in the glorious presence of his Lord and Savior who has spoken the words we all long to hear one day, “Well done my good and faithful servant, well done!” We all have so many “Kevin” stories. Stories full of love, laughter, life and even sorrow. We will carry these stories in our hearts for the rest of our days. Kevin loved deeply from the heart and he loved each one of you here today and those who are with us in spirit. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Susan Kray McDowell; daughter, Jillian Grace McDowell; son, Keegan James McDowell (Tori Verret); sister, Sherry L. Lewis (John); brothers, Mark McDowell (Betsy), Scott McDowell (Beverly), Bob McDowell (Dina), and Patrick McDowell (Arlene); sister-in-law, Lorraine McDowell; brother-in-law, Robert "Bubba" Patin; and numerous nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Evelyn McDowell; sister, Susan McDowell Patin; and brother, Gary McDowell.
