Wiley Elmer Bishop

Graveside services will be held in Magee, Mississippi at Magee City Cemetery on Thursday, July 20, 2006 at 10:00 am for Wiley Bishop, 74, who passed away Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at a local hospital in Lafayette, La. Mr. Bishop, the son of the late Elmer Everette and the former Annie Bell Bishop, was born on May 7, 1932, in Magee, Mississippi. He grew up next door to the former Rebecca Myers who eventually became his wife. He graduated from Magee High School lettering in football and baseball and received a scholarship to play both sports at Co-Lin Junior College in Mississippi. In 1951-1952 he served his country in the Korean War as an Army Medic. Following the war, Mr. Bishop graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi receiving a bachelor's degree in geology. Upon graduating, he became a drilling fluids engineer for Dresser-Magcobar in New Orleans in which he flew sea planes for the company. His family later moved to Lake Charles and back to New Orleans before settling in Lafayette, La in 1974. He worked as an executive account manager for Dresser-Magcobar (later M-I Drilling Fluids) until his retirement in 1992. He has been a very active member of the community throughout the years. He was on the executive committee of LAGCOE for several years, chairman of the Gulf Coast Oil Center Golf Association, past president of Oakbourne Men's Golf Association, and chairman of Oakbourne Country Club Golf Tournament committee. He served as president of Oakbourne Country Club in 1985-1986. He was a member of the American Institute of Mechanical Engineers and was past-chairman of the Teche chapter of the American Petroleum Institute. Wiley was an avid outdoorsman. His love for fishing, hunting, and golfing was only surpassed by his love for family and friends. One of his greatest joys in life was having friends and family over for cookouts and crawfish boils. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Rebecca Myers Bishop; two sons, Michael Wiley Bishop and wife, Renee', of Woodstock, Georgia and John Mark Bishop and wife, Denise Trulove, of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren, Jessica and Justin Bishop of Woodstock, Georgia and Danielle and Nicholas Bishop of Houston, Texas; one brother, Kelly Bishop and wife, Carol, of Raymond, Mississippi; one sister, Ann Connor and husband, Jacy, of Flora, Mississippi; one aunt, Claudia Kelly of Mt. Olive Mississippi and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many wonderful friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Annie Bell Bishop.
