Adeline Belle Irwin

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on December 30, 2015 at Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Adeline Belle Irwin, 96, of Lafayette, Louisiana passed away December 27, 2015 at Lafayette General Hospital. Reverend James Craft of Calvary Baptist Church will conduct the funeral services. Interment will be at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Adeline was born on November 22, 1919 in Boston, Massachusetts to Charles and Florence (Lewis) Scollay. She loved and treasured her family and loved people unconditionally. She was a homemaker, faithful and true mother to her children. She taught her children about Jesus and to kneel at their bedsides for nighttime prayer. She valued and provided a welcoming home for family, friends and the downtrodden. In her lifetime she willingly served as Room Mother doing creative things to the surprise and thrill of the teachers, as well as the children. She delighted in making costumes for her children who won 1st place in many costume competitions. She loved traveling with her Navy husband, always making new friends and providing a welcoming home for those away from home at Christmas as well as everyday life. She was a lover of all animals great and small, taking in stays and orphans nursing them back to health. That love for the alone and downtrodden extended to people whom she has helped throughout the years. She and her soul mate husband loved traveling together, with friends and pets. She loved showing her Champion dogs at dog shows. During World War II she answered her patriotic duty and went to work at the US Navy Yard in Portsmouth, Virginia. Once in Lafayette, a loyal civil servant working for the Social security Administration from where she retired after 25 years of service. She was a creative spirit, an artist and painter providing cherished artwork and keepsakes for friends and family. Her life was long, interesting and productive, leaving behind her family and friends will miss her dearly. Adeline is survived by her son Tommy W. Irwin and wife Shirley of Lafayette; her daughter, Yvonne Marilynn Cook and husband Jimmy of Alexandria, Louisiana; her 5 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry D. Irwin; her parents, Charles L. Scollay, Florence Denise Lewis; and one grandson. The family will receive friends at Delhomme Funeral Home - Bertrand on December 30, 2015 from 11:30 AM until the time of service at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donation in Adeline's name may be made to the Shriners’ Crippled Children Hospital, 3100 Samford Avenue, Shreveport, LA 71103, the Shriners’ Burn Hospital for Children, 815 Market Street, Galveston, TX 77550, or a charity of your choice.
