Argentine Emelia Fisher

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, March 5, 2011 in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Argentine Emelia "Mimi" Black Fisher, 91, who passed away at 9:35 am on February 28, 2011 at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center in Lafayette. Reverend Thomas Finley will be Celelbrant of the memorial Mass. Mimi was born in New Orleans, attended school in Paris, France and graduated from the Louise S. McGehee School in New Orleans. She attended Newcomb Art College before moving to New York City where she graduated with a degree in zoology from Barnard College. Returning to New Orleans, she taught a laboratory course at Tulane University while illustrating a zoology text. Mimi married and moved in the mid-1950s to Lafayette, where she reared her five daughters and made numerous lifelong friends. She was an active member of the Medical Auxiliary, Women's Auxiliary and L'Avenir for many years and enjoyed serving as an elections commissioner. Once her children were grown, she worked as a "nanny" and personal assistant for a close friend, living with the family in New York, Bel Air, California and Houston. When in her late 70s, Mimi completed CNA training and licensing and worked both private nursing and for nursing homes caring for the elderly. Mimi will be remembered for her indomitable spirit and unfailing sense of humor; her strength, compassion and creativity will be missed by many. Mimi was preceded in death by her parents, Harry Archibald Black and the former Argentine Marie Anderson. She is survived by 5 daughters, Argentine Mary Fisher of Lafayette, Elizabeth Fisher Williams of Kenner, Katherine Fisher Rogers and husband Kirk P., Emelia Fisher Steilow and husband Kyle F., and Claire Adah-Marie Fisher and Louis Kuhnell of Lafayette; 4 grandsons, William Burke Morris, Jr. and wife Christina Snyder, John Patrick Rogers, Taylor Grant Steilow, and McKinley Roark Fisher-Lynd; as well as 4 great-grandchildren, Savannah Brooke Morris, Brooklyn Nichole Rogers, Tyler James Morris and Shelby Ann Morris. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Shankaraiah Kothapalli and the caretakers, staff and residents of Bethany MHS Health Care Center and the doctors, nurses, aides and all of the staff on 3 East at Our Lady of Lourdes.
