Bonton Mayes

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, December 29, 2008 at East Bayou Baptist Church for Bonton Mayes, 82, who passed away on December 26, 2008 at Lafayette General Medical Center. Reverend Mike Walker, Pastor of East Bayou Baptist Church, will conduct the funeral services and will be assisted by Reverend Gary Funderburk, Associate Pastor of East Bayou Baptist Church and Reverend Bob Nolan, Pastor of Central Baptist Church. Musical selections will be provided by Karen Nolan and Kitty Credeur. Mr. Mayes, a resident of Lafayette, was the son of the late John Mayes of Coushatta, Louisiana and the former Gurtha Lusby of Troy, Arkansas. Mr. Mayes proudly served in the United States Air Force during World War II. He is a charter member of East Bayou Baptist Church since 1969. He was a Mason for the past 60 years. He was a member of the American Legion in Breaux Bridge for over 60 years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother who will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rita Bourque Mayes of Lafayette; four daughters, Linda Stauffer and her husband, Scott of Houston, Texas, Gwendolyn Mayes Riddick of Lafayette, Cindy Triche of Indiana Bayou and her husband, Warren Triche of Thibodaux, Vickie Guidry and her husband, Nick of Cankton,; one son, Ralph Mayes of Lafayette; eleven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Jimmie Ramsey and her husband, Robert of Atlanta, Texas; and one brother, Robert Mayes and his wife, Billie of Troy, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents; one great-grandson, Dominick Duplantis; one sister, Agnes Clayton; and two brothers, Rowe Mayes and Percy Mayes. The family requests that visiting hours be observed on Sunday from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Delhomme Funeral Home and will continue on Monday at East Bayou Baptist Church in Lafayette from 8:00 am until time of service. Pallbearers will be Shane Ferrara, Blaine Reaux, Brian Reaux, Joshua Guidry, Jacob Theroit and Joshua Olivier. Honorary pallbearers will be Donald Mills, Warren Triche, Scott Stauffer, Frank Chapman, Steve Stockton and Nick Guidry. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the family.
