Ethel Cutman

A celebration of life for Ethel Mae Gingrich Cutman, 93, who passed away on September 7, 2015 at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, will be held at First Lutheran Church in Lafayette, LA., 301 W. Farrel Rd. on September 13, 2015. Visitation will be at 2:00 PM till the service at 3:00 PM, with a reception to follow. The service will be conducted by Reverend Robert Miller Ethel was born, the second of six children, to Mary and Arthur Gingrich on April 25, 1922 in Hummelstown, PA, She grew up there and graduated from Hummelstown High School in 1939. In November 1941, she married, had her only child, Arla in 1943, and moved to Harrisburg, PA. where she lived for 50 years. In 1956, after being single for a couple years, she married Earl H. Cutman For many years they were affiliated with Atlantic-Richfield Co, He was the mechanic, when service stations really rendered service, and she was the bookkeeper. Ethel also was employed in the book department of the Harrisburg News Agency, which fit right in with her love of reading. After Earl’s death in 1991, she relocated to Lafayette, La in 1993 to be near her family. She immediately became busy working at Amber’s Craft Store and stayed until it closed. Devoutly religious all her life, she was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hummelstown for 70 years and an active member of First Lutheran Church in Lafayette since 1993. Ethel was well known for her knowledge of the scriptures, taught many Bible study classes and led the Ladies Group for years. Her memory was amazing. She spent many hours doing volunteer work and was a proud recipient of the Bishop Segura Medal for her works. In her younger days, her energy seemed boundless. She loved to read and to knit and crochet. Many beautiful items were produced by her nimble fingers until about a year ago when her eyesight failed. Her family was everything to her and she showered her love upon them through her cooking. Scrumptious cookies and delicious soups were her specialty. Her Christmas cookie plates were legend. Ethel is survived by one daughter, Arla H. Pillion and her husband, Robert; her brother, Robert Gingrich, her sister, N. Lynn Boehler, her Grandson, Erik A. Belsom and his wife Beth; her Granddaughter, Erin M. Belsom; her Great-granddaughters; Katelyn Brooke Belsom, Kiley Marie Belsom, Emily Nicole Belsom; one step-son, David J. Cutman and his wife Joanne and one step-daughter in-law, Vicki Cutman; Step-grandchildren; Kathryn Dirk (Craig), Kristen Gold (Aaron), Dennis Cutman, Robert Cutman, and Ada G. Manning (Tim). Step- great grandchildren: Stephanie and Jessica Dirk and Steven, Ashley and Emily Hoffman. Ethel is pre-deceased by her parents Mary Caroline Smith Gingrich and Arthur Raymond Gingrich; her husband of 36 years, Earl H. Cutman; her siblings; Ralph M. Gingrich, David Gingrich, and Helen G. Landvater; One step-daughter, Alice Gibbony, and one step-son, Joseph Cutman. Later this month, her Louisiana family will bring her home to her Pennsylvania family for a service at Zion Lutheran Church in Hummelstown, PA. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Harrisburg, PA. with her husband Earl. In lieu of flowers, Ethel requested donations be made to St. Jude’s Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, her favorite charity. The family wishes to thank the staff of Maison de Lafayette for the loving care provided to Ethel during the last 8 months of her life. She was happy and content with you.
