Genevieve Evans

Genevieve Evans peacefully passed from her beautiful life at 1:48 a.m. on December 27, 2012, shortly after hosting a bedside family celebration. She was 102 years old. We should all hope to be as loved as this strong, positive and radiant woman who kept us laughing and hopeful about life even as she knew hers was ending. Genevieve was born on July 22, 1910 in Miller County, Arkansas. In the year of her birth the union included only 46 states and Thomas Edison demonstrated the first talking motion picture. She lived to witness the first pop-up toaster, the manufacture of insulin, the jet engine, the electron microscope, the first computer, Slinky, the microwave oven, Mr. Potato Head, the black box flight recorder, the pacemaker, the microchip, and countless medical advances that helped her life transcend the Great War, the Great Depression, and the Second World War; followed by nearly seven decades of unparalleled global change. Genevieve lived during the terms of thirteen presidents. Throughout, she remained a grounded and resourceful woman who at 90 years old made an ice storm and a power outage bearable for some of us one winter when we woke to find her making coffee with nothing more than the same wood fire and a tin pot she would have relied upon in her twenties during the Depression. Facing hardship, including the loss of three children ' the first, a daughter, one year to the day after her birth, Genevieve was resilient. We admire her for grit mixed with gracious hospitality. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, great and great-great grandmother, and friend. She leaves behind many loved ones who grieve terribly for the loss, but are blessed with the lessons she gave us in strength, determination and a stubbornly positive attitude. Genevieve was preceded in death by her grandparents; parents; one sister; one daughter, Hazel Genevieve Evans; two sons, Kenneth Dan Evans and Arthur Jerry Evans. She is survived by one daughter, Janice Evans Johnson; eleven grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
