Dr. Jerome Michael Broussard

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 PM on Thursday, October 12, 2023 in Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist for Jerome Michael Broussard, MD (known to most as Jerry B) who passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2023, at his home in Lafayette, LA. Rev. Fr. Marshall E. Boulet will be Celebrant of the Mass and officiate the funeral services. Very Rev. Fr. Chester Arceneaux will be serving as concelebrant. Lectors will be Andrew Broussard and Claire Broussard. Gift Bearers will be Finn Folse and Colin Folse. Burial will take place in Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Cemetery. Jerome was born on September 30, 1946 to Dennis Mary Broussard of Lafayette and Nelly Mabel Lauland of Napoleanville, LA. He had one older sister, Dorothy Reid of Lafayette. He attended Mount Carmel from kindergarten through second grade and Cathedral from third through eighth grade. He entered the Immaculata Seminary for 9th and 10th grades and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1964. He was the president of his senior class and student body president, also lettering in football and track. One of his proudest moments that he loved to brag about was scoring three extra points against his hated rival, Fatima. Jerome attended USL and graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and biology. He was also a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. After graduating, he married Bonnie Hebert of Lafayette, and they had two children, Brett and Jenny. He was a second lieutenant in the US Army from 1968 to 1971. He served a 10 month tour in Vietnam as a Green Beret, with Special Forces and Special Operations. Jerome then returned to Louisiana, where he attended Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans and graduated in 1978. He completed his internship and residency in Houston under the University of Texas system, training at St. Joseph Hospital, Hermann Hospital, MD Anderson Cancer Hospital and Tumor Institute from 1978 to 1982. During that time, he received many awards and recognitions including outstanding chief resident of his program. Jerome moved back to Lafayette and begin practicing as an OB/GYN in 1982. He practiced until his retirement in 2009, delivering thousands of babies over the many years he practiced. He was extremely dedicated to all of his patients, never hesitating to answer calls, even during family vacations and in the middle of holiday dinners. He was a member of numerous boards and organizations, serving as president of the board at Women’s and Children’s Hospital, a delegate for the State of Louisiana Medical Society, and one of the founders of the Vietnam Veterans Association. Jerome especially loved Mardi Gras where he was a member of the Krewes of Bonaparte, Endymion, Gabriel, and Les Brigands de Lafitte. He was a lifelong sports fan and especially loved LSU football. He had a great sense of humor, never missing an opportunity to tell an off-color joke. He loved collecting eclectic art during his travels and going out to dinner, especially at Judice Inn, Imonelli, and Alesi’s, where he often made great friends with the waitstaff. He was loved by so many and will be greatly missed. Jerome is survived by his son, Brett Broussard, and his wife, Bethany (Veazey) and their children Andrew and Claire, and his daughter, Jennifer Broussard Folse, her husband Trent and their children Finn and Colin. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Bonnie Hebert Humphries, and numerous other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Dennis Mary Broussard and Nelly Mabel (Lauland) Broussard, his sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Bob Reid, paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Elise Broussard, Senior, and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Elphage Lauland. He was also proceeded in death by his faithful canine companion, Peeto. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home - Bertrand on Wednesday, October 11, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 PM on Wednesday evening in the funeral home. Visiting hours will continue Thursday, October 12, 2023 from 11:00 AM - 1:10 PM. Pallbearers will be Terry Segura, Bob Segura, Frank Bacque MD, Dewitt "Zeen" David, Dick Flower, Daniel McCoy, Glenn Hebert, Danny Broussard, Danny Domingue, Dick Speyrer, Sherwin Veillon and George "Burner" Pourciau. Honorary Pallbearers will be Charlie Rovello and Brett Mellington. The family would like to thank Bridgeway Hospice and his many caregivers, especially Samantha Bernard. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Cathedral Carmel Foundation. Jerome considered himself a lifelong Tiger and Cathedral-Carmel remained near and dear to his heart throughout his life.
