Mary L. Massengale

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Mary Massengale, 94, who passed away on March 27, 2011 at 11:30 pm at Rosewood Retirement Community. Reverend Ann Sutton will conduct the funeral services. Burial will take place in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Mary Massengale was born February 18, 1917 in Bearden, Arkansas, the only child of Henry and Ruth Vance Lyons. Shortly after graduating high school, she met the love of her life, Tobe Massngale, a highway contractor who was working on the highway near her home. From there, it was quite a journey. They eventually settled in Lafayette for many years, and Mary ultimately resided for the past five and a half years at Rosewood Retirement Community where she spent many happy days with the wonderful residents and staff. Mary's loving nature toward them and especially her incredible sense of humor will be remembered by all. Mary, known to so many who loved her as "Mam-ma," is survived by three children, Bill Massengale and his wife Dixie, of Bearden, Arkansas, Jim Massengale and his wife Billie, of Baton Rouge, and Cissy and her husband Pat Breaux of Lafayette. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Cindy and her husband Tim Magarahan of Germantown, TN, Toby Massengale and his wife Lynn, Dr. Trent Massengale and his wife Dr. Ann Zedlitz, and Rick Massengale and his wife Shelley, all of Baton Rouge, as well as Brad Breaux and his wife, Kerri, Andy Breaux and Ross Breaux, all of Lafayette. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren. Mary was a charter member of Northwood United Methodist Church where for many years she faithfully devoted her time and resources, having served on the first building committee and being a member of the United Methodist Women's organization and the Friendship Club of Northwood. She was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Ruth Vance Lyons, and her husband, Tobe Massengale. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home of Lafayette on Wednesday from 10:00 am until the time of services. Memorial contributions can be made in the name of Mrs. Massengale to Northwood United Methodist Church, 4530 Moss Street, Lafayette, LA, 70507 or to Heart of Hospice, 201 W. Vermilion Street, Lafayette, LA, 70501. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Toby, Trent and Rick Massengale, and Brad, Andy and Ross Breaux. Honorary Pallbearers will be Pat Breaux and Tim Magarahan.
